Colin was obviously mid-coke binge when he was called to the stage to accept his award - his speech, spoken at 80 mph, was a textbook example of drug-fueled philosophizing (i.e. pseudo-profound gobbledygook). Whatever, at least he looked clean.

I mean, have you actually heard what people on coke sound like? It's all self-aggrandizing pseudo-profundity. This is him just taking self-deprecation to the nth degree because he's talked about himself non-stop for about 4 years to one other person in a room. But it ain't drugs. He's way too self-conscious.

And I think its obvious that she and Leo are among the best of friends. They've shared a lot as actors and grown up together as actors.
And its obvious that she adores and respects her husband and family. And that Sam M. adores her as well. Their long embrace and her shout out to the kids - So sweet.
I am so in love with her!
IF she doesn't get her Oscar this year, I will proceed to boycott any film not featuring Kate until she finally receives her very deserved award.

Exactly. It reminded me of Sarah Silverman (also kind of an asshole) did that "Britney's vagina" face at whatever awards show that was. Just mean. There's room for humor, but mean-spirited sucker punches just feel wrong to me. I guess I just don't get the humor of publicly attacking somebody who's having a difficult time.

Funny or not, I just don't think the Golden Globes are an appropriate venue for that kind of stand-up.
01/12/09
I don't know about the difficult time though, maybe it's because I don't actually think either Ritchie or Madonna are having a difficult time. Their children certainly, they on the other hand seem to be spending their time getting snapped with potential new partners, which is fine but also sort of fair game in a court the media, die by the media way.

Anyway, I'm not a prude or anything, I swear! I think one can be snarky without being cruel or facile. Plus, I always think the funniest stuff is self-deprecating humor.

I also liked the moments when the cameras caught various celebrities looking bored and toying with their blackberries.
And my god, how long was Spielburg's speech?!

Yes Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Yes I did. A child could have figured that one out.
Mad Men level excellence: ur doin it rong.

@LaComtesse: oh yeah I know, the politics of it all render it ridiculous. And I sort of agree about Ledger but to be honest I'm not sure he deserves it just because he's dead. But I know that's an unpopular view. The only comparison is really with Peter Finch but he actually was the best candidate the year he won (then again maybe my dislike of the Dark Knight as a film is clouding my judgement).
Plus you are right RR was a better film when called American Beauty. Not sure about Mendes and film but his stage plays I like, I just saw his Cherry Orchard in New York and it was brilliant.

By the end of the book, I loathed April and Frank Wheeler. They were annoying, shallow, idiotic, lethargic, inert -- everything that was and always has been wrong about 20th century Americans. And, therefore, the book, the story, the characters, were absolutely brilliant.

@stoprobbers: oh I agree but the point is I still think its better than RR and they both have pretty much the same ideas under Mendes' direction. As I said it's his plays I liked.

@Rooo sez BISH PLZ: Granted, I am no expert on his work, but ever since the Godfather, I don't think Paccino has done anything especially stunning... unless they have added a "Quirky Shouting Regardless of Social Propriety" category.
