I hate the term White trash. It implies that only Whites with money are worth anything AND it kind of posits all Blacks as their equivalent. Like 'a poor White might as well be a nigger'. It's a fail all around the board.
OK kind of OT but I've always felt a little embarassed that my love of Hedy Lamarr is entirely based on Blazing Saddles and Hedley Lamarr even though I've heard she tried to stop them from naming the character that.
I cannot stand Trudie Styler. She enjoys the literal jet set lifestyle with fully staffed luxury mansions scattered around the globe and then has the nerve to lecture the rest of us on how OUR lifestyles are ruining the planet. Marie Antoinette knew no better, growing up in the lap of luxury and priviledge. Trudie Styler grew up in a working class council house. When she gives up the extravagant lifestyle as her bit for saving the planet THEN I might be prepared to listen to what she has to say. Until then, she might care to remember exactly what happened to Marie Antoinette, when she too gave the peasantry lifestyle tips.
@Rare Affinity: I knew someone who worked for her and Sting, and while this person was too gracious to go into gory detail, she made it quite clear that Styler was a cluelessly spoiled, hyperdemanding nightmare.
"How would you like being a young actor walking into a casting agent and the first thing they say is, 'Leave!' " - Liev Schreiber on NPR on the way people used to mispronounce his name. [Page Six]
Pardon my ignorance, but that's the way I still pronounce it. Anyone able to get me a phonetic update?
Well done, New Moon script lady - how cool that she didn't splash it all over the internet, and how nice that the producers have rewarded her for it. I love it when I hear stories like this and am reminded that there are still people in the world with integrity, and we are not, necessarily, all going to Hell in a Reality-TV handbasket.
@Diziet_Sma: I agree (even though one could argue that that's exactly where that script belonged, lol).
I left my textbook on the train last week and someone actually found it, and contacted me after they saw posters I put up in the station. It really renews my faith in people, and I feel kind of bad that I won't get to thank them in person because they're turning it in to the lost and found. It's $90 I don't have to spend again!!
I also love Hedy Lamarr! There is a great novel (in Spanish, but I'm sure it's translated into English) it's called Pubis Angelical by Manuel Puig (author of Kiss of The Spider Woman)
When I saw the picture from Heidi & Seals wedding, my first thought was 'what the fuck' and my second thought was 'the idiots are completely clueless'. It was the height of bad taste to have a 'white trash' wedding. I can't believe that there was no-one to tell them that it was a stupid and offensive idea. It truly makes me wonder about 'America's Favourite Inter-racial Marriage'. Having a 'poor white trash' wedding is like having a 'coon' wedding or in Heidi's case a 'Nazi' wedding. How the two could combine bigotry with a renewal of wedding vows is amazing.
@Diziet_Sma: 'On one of the happiest days of our lives, let's mock people who haven't had the advantages we've had'. Methinks it's less a renewal of vows and more of a way to make sure they stay in the news at least ONE day a year.
@topsy: I totally agree with you; my ass is CHAPPED. It makes me wonder ~ were they always so insensitive and dim, or has the cosset of fame rotted their sense of perspective?
I kept reading comments hoping someone would finally say something!
I have relatives who live in trailers, go barefoot in summer, wear overalls and work on farms. They don't do it because they choose to be "white trash". It's because they are POOR.
BUT, if I may jump onto the crazy assumption bandwagon, I think I'll marry Enrique Iglesias in Germany with a lederhosen theme and have a Hitler impersonator officiate.
@msfriendly: Girl you beat me to it! I was thinking of marrying Boris Becker in Nairobi with a Gone With the Wind theme and a Robert E. Lee impersonator.
I know you know this, but John Lennon's been dead nearly 30 years, not 20. For a minute I was like, wait, this happened when I was old enough to remember (I'm 30) and I have absolutely no recollection of it?! What the hell was wrong with 10-year-old me?
Farah Fawcett's cancer experiences are probably far too common. Instead of the concern being on the sufferer it is all too often on the visitor or indeed non-visitors. The latter believing that they would feel so distressed at seeing a friend so ill they decide not to see them at all. Or else, as my mother found, peole just wanted to come to say their goodbyes at a time when she was still hoping she might survive.
@Rare Affinity: Yes. When my friend was diagnosed with terminal cancer a mutual friend of ours never visited her (or went to her funeral) because it was too much of a bummer. For HER. Unreal.
People just don't know how to act. It's sad. My husband has terminal cancer, and the volume of people saying stuff like "I'm praying for you" and emailing him the latest get well cancer scam has been a real education.
I work overtime at not letting every day be a practice funeral. So far it's working.
@PaintedTrollop: I admire your fortitude and hope you have some real friends and family who can be there for you as much as you are there for your husband.
@keldo: I have a friend who falls into that category. She has to live with the guilt. It was brought home to her after our friend's death that when she was ill in turn (not a life threatening illness) I was the only person who went round to see how she was and make sure she had sufficient food in the house.
@PaintedTrollop: I'm so sorry. We had the same type of experience when my dad had terminal cancer. "Try blueberries! Try this supplement made of ground-up seashells!" They mean well but they are thoughtless.

Oh, THIS. If you're old, then so am I, because I feel this way about at least 70% of current pop music.
But good on Ri-Ri. This is the best possible outcome.
