Can The Madonna/Gwyneth Friendship Survive? |
11/07/08
Madonna's known for cutting people out of her life, often ruthlessly. It's kind of sad she doesn't seem to have any real women friends who are contemporaries, and non-famous. She hardly knew Stella very well, the girl was surprised to be asked to be bridesmaid, she said.
Besides competitive dieting, yoga, and extremely boring macrobiotic food issues, I guess what Gwyneth and Madonna have in common is that they over-romanticized British men and life in England, and are disappointed to find it not what they thought. They both had the money and fame to live the best life possible in London- yet they both seem depressed there, especially Madonna.
Gwyneth actually is far more down-to-earth than her image, in my personal experience. I wonder if Madonna's is a friendship that's become bothersome, overbearing, to her. You know Madonna always has to be boss, is a pretty rigid person in her severe opinions-and that must be stressful sometimes. Just musing..

It wasn't a very good movie, but remember in Notting Hill where Julia Roberts was a massive movie star, but she found friendship and pleasure in London by toning it down, going to that casual dinner party, quietly making friends, talking? I think M is incapable of this. That scene reminded me of my best times in London. But you have to be interested in other people, not fuss over the food, etc. I think she's at a point where if she isn't constantly reassured she's a star, she literally doesn't know who she is.

I'm not feeling in great shape today, but thank fuck I don't have friendships based on that. Hurray!
(unless of course you swap the words 'what we eat' with 'how much we drink' and 'yoga' with 'personal crises')!

Lots of misconceptions on these two. I have friends that I work out with and have an occasional dinner with, but they aren't my bestie.
I think the media contrived quite a bit of this.

I am totally unsubscribing from GOOP. This is the final straw.

As you might guess I'm not very fond of Ms Paltrow, she appears to believe that she has class, her comments suggest otherwise.

Not that that is in any way relevant to a multi-millionairess.

I'm not sayin' that's representative of every hospital there because, who knows, maybe that was just an odd holdout (again, I am NOT an expert), but I was certainly surprised by it, because in the good ol' modernization-happy US of A that thing would've seen a wrecking ball 30 or 40 years ago.

US hospitals have more money than UK hospitals, so they tend to be prettier and have more (often not that necessary) high tech machines. UK hospitals are more like a GOOD public hospital in the US than a private US hospital.
The quote is just odd though. "Oh no, the hospital is slow! I'll give birth on my mom's couch instead!"

So that's the good bit, now the bad - superficially one on one treatment is better in US hopitals - I had an incredible experience giving birth in the US and in contrast to my sister I would say that my comfort levels plus the drugs I was given were way better and yes the hospital looked less 19th century than some in the UK.
However I'm still engaged in open warfare with the aneasthetist who performed my emergency c-section at 2 in the morning to prevent my daughter from dying as my health care provider won't cover this.
So weighing up my imminent bankrupcy against my excellent treatment and taking mortality rates v cleanliness into account, I might have been better off giving birth in the UK.
Of course none of these would concern Madonna and Gwynnie both of whom I loathe and thus don't listen to.

I know if someone tried to get my husband into "Catholic mysticism" he would just laugh his ass off. Who wants to spend their time doing a highly concentrated version of the crap they hated being forced to do when they were kids?

Not buying into Kabbalah makes me like Gwyneth a tad more.

I love Madge, but this bugs me since I actually am from Detroit.
Alas, I'm not famous, and nobody would know where Rochester, MI is...
