two feet of snow on giant fir trees = not okay.

I am NOT advocating "hate speech," so don't misunderstand me. At least Kate had the balls to admit to her mistake and not try to backpedal a denial.
Does Kate need to grow up? Absolutely. She's what, a whopping 22? I dread to think what I was doing at 22, still in college, waiting table to pay tuition, surfing and partying, having random sex. Thankfully, I wasn't doing it on national TV.

As an Old, it has been my experience that being a little less judgmental is a beneficial thing. I've been around a lot longer than you, so I've had a lot longer to make more mistakes than you, but I guarantee you, there will come a day when you screw up.
Or maybe you will just continue on in your perfection.

I don't see anyone here defining her by that mistake; several of us have said she's probably not a homophobe. The point was that some words need to be retired and the one she used is one of them.We can't have opinions on things if we've made mistakes before? It's not like anyone here is calling for her head on a platter. I thought we were having a pretty tame discussion regarding what she said in the interview.
And I don't see how being condescending is supposed to be a good counter to judgy-ness.

It's not being judgmental, it's not accepting hate. It is the things we say in the heat in the moment the speak louder than rational thought. The fact that her instinct was to say what she said to Dyshaun, does define her. If the first thing you say to try and disparage someone is something about their sexuality or their race, it does say a lot about you. Especially because it was so ingrained that you didn't even have to think about it. Just like what he said to Katie does define him. He is a misogynistic asshole and she is someone who resorts to slurs when agnry.
12/22/08
That doesn't make me a saint and it doesn't mean I never have nasty thoughts. I'm willing to give Kate some leeway, but I'm really disturbed with the idea that everyone normal has at one time or another used a racial slur. My standards are higher than that and at 29, I don't see advancing age turning me into someone who uses racial slurs.
12/22/08
I did not say it was okay to call names. However, let those of us with sin cast the first stone. Because you will never convince me that none of you bashing me have never in your life said a bad word to anyone.
@Jessi Ramsey: I NEVER SAID IT WAS OKAY. But people makes mistakes and you are no different.

If you post that everyone has used slurs, you have to expect some people to respond that they haven't and you shouldn't get so righteous about it.

I don't like the notion that people cannot control their words and that they shouldn't be held accountable for what they say. Words have weight and she struck a lower blow than he did. Now, should he take responsibility for his words? Yep. But she should take responsibility for the fact that this is the first thing that comes to mind when she wants to verbally one-up the competition? Double yep.

Also, in regards to the BA, this is for a position within a magazine, so I would hope someone would have a background in journalism or the focus of the magazine, which would normally come from college or internships. I think its not necessary, as long as they have the degree of experience to obtain the position, but working in a store and knowing designers is not editorial experience at all.
That being said, everyone on the show was so devoid of likability, I could care less who won, other than the fact that the prize they are winning is pretty sweet for kids wanting to sabotage future happiness and entering fashion as their career.

Gang, we're acting as if these people were actual applicants to an actual job. They were not. They were contestants on a reality show.

Thank you. This argument is just as pointless as Black Men vs. White Women. Besides the fact it doesn't get us anywhere, where does my black (female) ass fit in? Dude is black and gay. Now what?
@Mina_da_mad_child: Jessi and I are both black so we know the difference. The point isn't to say they're the same; the point is to find the most comparable scenario that everyone is familiar with in order to draw a comparison and for that, it's effective.

This was a nasty, nasty show that brought out the best of NOBODY.

Also, I'm really happy to hear from Megan's business partner. Megan made herself sound like a successful business woman who "got bored" with her store. It's nice to know the truth. Megan is a real piece of work. At least she didn't fool the people who matter. The right person won.

I'm just saying I understand the human reaction that pushed her to that point. Ideally we'd all live our lives turning the other cheek and being the bigger person, and I'm sure in the future she's going to keep herself much more under control. Nobody's giving her a free pass to use those words whenever anyone pisses her off - I'm just acknowledging that hey, it's human to fly off the handle and even more human to apologize and ask for forgiveness later.

Dyshuan is nasty, disgusting human being. And It says a lot about how deep his misogyny runs by the way he treated Katie on the show. He should be held accountable and I don't think what he said was acceptable at all. But the fact that she chose a hateful word with a lot more power than chlamydia, says a lot about her. The things that you come out of your moth when you aren't thinking are way more telling then a rational comeback. I'm not excusing Dyshuan I'm just upset by the fact that people are trying to make excuses for hate speech by saying "hey, anger happens. she was pushed."
Se also used the "I'm friends with the gay community " to try and rectify what she said.

12/22/08
If Dyshuan wrote Tracie saying, "I called her chlamydia because she was really annoying. I'm not a misogynist, I have lots of women friends and I work in fashion. It is just Katie I hate." I would have a problem that he was trying to justify his treatment of Katie. And even more so because it was completely unprovoked. So what he didn't like Katie, there is no reason for him to verbally attack Katie the way he did.
I just do not tolerate hate speech( that goes both ways and what Dyshaun says qualifys as hate speech) and even more so, I do not tolerate excuses for hate speech.
12/22/08
I agree.
I probably would've callen him a pussy (which I know isn't very feminist is it? Oops) but I would be thinking about what would bother a guy the most.

I LOVE that Kate came to Jezebel to tell her story. Also, Kate, hon, I assume you are reading this post and I love you. I think you can kick Megan's butt at everything, except bitching. She may have that market cornered.
Keep your head up, honey. Don't look at those beneath you, only those above you :)

"Editing" to me is a fucking lame excuse. Own up to your mistakes, apologize even. But don't try to convince me or anyone that you were never as mean as you came off. No one is that stupid.

And for the record, I know a lot of viewers were turned off by her when she bailed out of a challenge whose reward was family videos because it wasn't "worthwhile enough". People were livid that she didn't want to see videos of her kids. Rightfully so--and how can that be edited? She said she didn't want to see them!
