Calling someone Paki---is it racist or just being ignorant.

B/c the last time I checked...Pakistani wasn't a race and they are considered to be white.

So, I don't get the whole idea of people calling him racist.

@texanbelle: In the U.K, Pakistani is recorded as a separate ethnic group, plus they are definitely not viewed as white (especially as most of them tend to be a lovely shade of brown).

What I find so odd when I read all the "Two Princes" threads on Jezebel, is that a lot of US commenters think "royal" means something special.

I don't mean that as a snide attack or anything, just that there's something I find difficult to put my finger on and spell out precisely. It's just curious.

@bowleserised: Well, uh, doesn't their PR sort of suggest that they are supposed to be considered "special" being chosen by God and all to be born royal?

What always puzzles me about them is why we Americans bow and curtsy to them and accept titles from them when we really aren't supposed to because they aren't our royalty.

I like the royal family. To me they're just a historic, quaint old tradition and as a history lover, I like the idea of them. They have no power or real influence on anything of importance anymore, so I have no problem with their ceremonial or charitable existence. The monarchy is a huge, HUGE part of England's history, and I think a part of the charm of that country would be lost if they just ceased to exist. Well, it would be lost to ME anyway.

However, Harry knows better. I make a lot of racial jokes too, amongst my crowd of black, white, asian and mixed folks it's just the norm. But we are not in the position he is in. He has been raised, from birth (unlike his tragic, sad mother), knowing what to do and when. He DOES know better, he just chose not to act on what he knows. Which is a serious problem in a 25 year old man. He is not a kid anymore, and needs to face real consequences.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA.

Why doesn't anyone talk about the fact that it's not like Prince Harry probably introduced this language into the army barracks? That most soldiers (from most countries!) talk like this about their enemies? That they say all sorts of charming things about gays and women as well?

Oh, wait, that would mean actual long-term structural change in the way we think about other cultures rather than one-off efforts to feel better about ourselves by claiming Harry's more racist than the rest of 'em.

This reminds me of a trip I was recently on. I went with my white maile professor, a white male student, a Latina student, and myself (an African American female to Africa). The two males made jokes all the time that I found totally inappropriate, i.e. after having sat in the back of the car for a while the professor moved to the front and said "Ah this is what it is like to oppress people and why people like it." Not funny. We didn't say anything at the time and I'm sure he thought it was fine because everyone knows he is a good liberal who was in Africa only to do good. But me nor my Latina friend didn't find it funny at all and in the end I had to say something about how inappropriate it is.

I know we are all suppose to be so post-modern extra. But for people who are closely tied to the history many times these post modern anti-PC jokes just aren't funny, espcially coming from those who held positions of power historically. I don't know what gets more power than the freaking British monarchy. If this guy really did feel offended maybe he didn't feel free to say so. I know it took me a while to get the balls on the trip mentioned above to say something.

I am also sorry that the white male student didn't say something because it sounds like he's a racist jerk, too.

In the Cal State U system your prof's behavior and remarks would be actionable as harassment even before you said something. If he went on after you said something that would be even worse on his part.

I'm getting worked up about this because I'm so sick of it. I went to college right after high school in 1972 and it was like a big boys' club. How is it that in 2008 there are more female student than male students and in some colleges there are more non-white students than white students and yet white males are still acting like frat boys from the '30s?

I asked this question on gawker, and either there is no answer, or it isn't clear what answer he gave. What was the reason for the Nazi uniform? How could he possible explain that? I get that he came up with a bullshit excuse for this incident, but I want to hear what excuse he gave for the seemingly inexcusable Nazi incident.

He should know better and that is a heinous remark. It seems he is desperately trying to fit in with the lads (but going overboard in the process), I think. He's kicking against the constraints of his role. He hasn't realised yet that he will never be able to escape those responsibilities and just be 'one of the lads'. I suspect racist remarks are the norm in the military, though - that is the real crime here.

I know people who went to Eton/Harrow who are not racist (or plain stupid) knobs.

I hate the fact we have a royal family. We should let them go, run free! Leave 'em alone so they can have the dumb conversations they want to have with the people they want to talk to, and we don't have to get our knickers in a twist because they're racist/rich/out of touch.

The sooner we stop pretending that a bunch of aristocrats are somehow representative of our nation, the better for both us and them.
