I found it amusing/scary when someone stood up and said to the President at a town hall meeting on health care, if there was a clause in the bill saying essentially that after the age of 65 a government employee would come to your house and ask you how you want to die. In response the Pres. said something along the lines of not having the man power to go to every elderly persons home. Baracks dry wit = awsome exchanges between the knowledgeable and the not.
Was this part of the Red Hat Society's monthly outing? Like, after they went to go see a play at the community theater and then stampeded into a local bar to sip a Cosmo (that's what the whippersnappers are drinking these days, right?) and then have the bus pick them up and take them back to the home?
What bothers me most about this is that even when presented with clear, reasoned logic, THESE PEOPLE WILL NOT LISTEN. Also? 10 years ago, these same people would cry foul on anyone citing the internet as a source. Now these fools use it as their primary source for all information.

You know what Grandma, shut it. I love me some old people. I think they are awesome, but right now I just want to beat the living crap out of some senior citizens.
You're dying. I'm dying. We're all dying. Right now. It is going to happen. So can we stop acting like a bunch of petulant toddlers who are scared of the dark and address the subject like adults? No one is going to kill you, you psychopath, but you are going to die and it would probably be better to do so with the dignity of some well laid plans. I'm really starting to be worry that half of this county actually believes they are immortal.
@OffTheRecord: I do think a lot of this has to do with the fear of death, but at the same time, I think what these people are responding to is the lie put forth by Palin and others that there are going to be committees deciding on if you are "worthy" of care, which is a complete fabrication. I know Palin tried to backtrack and pretend that she was speaking of these "end of life" services, but if that's where her lie came from, she is really in need of some reading comprehension skills.
I wish the media would focus more on the supporters of the bill. I know that there are a lot of wing-nuts out there that oppose the bill, but it's disheartening to only see these fools on tv. It gives the impression that most Americans don't want healthcare reform. I think it's more 50/50, but media coverage would have us believe otherwise.
With that said, supporters need to be more vocal and visual with their support of the reform measures.
Why do these idiots always carry around little American flags? They think they can spew hate and stupidity, and it'll all be okay because they're carrying a flag?
Give me a fucking break. The flag should not be used for hate-mongering.
The most jarring thing about this picture for me is that almost everyone in it is smiling. Is this funny to these folks? Do they find sport in denying other people the opportunity to seek reprieve from their ailments?
I am beginning to wonder if the ability to think critically declines for many people after a certain age. Many of these "mature" protesters remind me of frustrated three year olds. You can't reason with them. They are so easily cowed by half truths and misinformation. Scarier it sounds the more fear it generates and the more likely they are to credit it as being the truth.
Also, I think these people have too much time on their hands. Previously I believed the retirement age to be too old. Now I am thinking that these folks would be better off busy doing something constructive - because this ISN'T IT.
PS Grandma - Just a moment ago I had to make yet another phone call b/c my insurance company is refusing to cover treatment my doctor deems necessary, basically because they don't feel like it. If anyone is trying to kill anyone, I'm pretty sure it's Humana that has it out for me.
The thing that really gets me is that they are spewing such obvious lies and yet we have to spend time debunking them and the white house even had to set up a site to deal with this crap. If these people have legitimate concerns, then voice those concerns in a reasonable manner and maybe we can all work together on it or at least come to some sort of compromise.
However, that's just it, isn't it? They don't really want to hear the facts. They want it to be outrageous -- something they can get all self-righteous about -- because then they don't have to admit that why they want to protest this is that 1. they don't want to help their fellow Americans because they are compassionless 2. They are racists and just hate hate hate that there is a president who is Black 3. That the world is changing for the better and their little narrow-minded, selfish way of life just might go away and that would mean they would have to grow to f up, which is probably the scariest of all to them.
The irony is that your first paragraph pretty much sums up all protesters regardless of cause. Unfortunately, nobody resorts to protesting because a reasonable manner has led to a workable solution or compromise...
I don't agree with them, and whether or not a person does agree with them, that doesn't change that sometimes protesting is all a person has to change things.
@HarpMadness: My job involves listening to people's phone conversations (I'm not big brother, I'm just captioning it for the deaf) and you should hear the violent hatred they spew about Obama. I just sit there recoiling. People are blindly hating him (to be fair, all presidents experience a pretty dramatic level of blind hatred) but it's just sick the way they tie it to his race.
@AwesomeJerkface: But where are their arguments? Where is the substance behind their stance? They are protesting something -- that the health plan includes "death panels" -- that does not exist. When people protested for civil rights, etc, it was because they were seeking to address very real problems in society. What obvious lies did the civil rights movement put forth? Or the women's movement?
@Snowbunny: You should sabotage their conversations!!! Instead of "that motherfucking [expletive deleted] Obama wants us to become socialist." (something I hear a lot) change it to "hey, did you know that Fox News is a lying sack of shit, and Obama's healthcare proposals will actually save us money?!"
Just kidding, I don't want you to get fired or anything...but it would be funny.

A few more dollars in therapy at the nursing home, and we can avoid all this unpleasantness.

You are of course correct.
But you see, three year olds can't vote.
Except in Chicago.
