Facebook seems to work well for activism in the U.S. when it's relatively self-serving. Look at the interest in and rapid growth of groups for blue and purple ticket-holders who weren't allowed onto the Mall for Inauguration.
@silentrationale: I'm currently trying to marshall People on Facebook to help save a local business - i think it's a great tool for gathering support! (much easier than going door-to-door with a clipboard)
Hmmm...'rampant human rights abuses', 'perpetual martial law' 'arrests without charges'...I see where Bush may have gotten his inspiration! Too bad his evil plans were thwarted. I remember when he was talking martial law at some point and I still shiver with how close that was.
Also: this is why using Egypt as an example as why piercing kitties ears might be ok is not such a good idea.
This is an awesome story. It is, in my opinion, inspiring that people are using Facebook (and other technologies - anyone remember how twitter was used to help the man who was arrested by the Egyptian police)for organizing and discussing political causes. I haven't had enough coffee, so I fear I cannot make my point eloquently, but I think this is so cool.
@lilbobbytables: Me too! But I think in my case I like it because I am justifying my hours wasted on facebook as furthering social justice, when in reality I'm just sending bumper stickers...
@heykoukla: Don't! They might discover online adoption centers! Then there will be no children left - like when my mom discovered eBay and bought all the editions of the Junior Classics Collection!!!
