I seriously glare at the geese by my lake and wonder if they'd throw me out of the complex if a wrang one tender neck and field dressed one of those poop machines...

    I didn't know TDJ hunted!

She doesn't hunt, but I went to Naomi Pomeroy's restaurant Beast recently, and it was aaaaaaaaamazing. I love cool female chefs. And she was there! I totally geeked out.

As a foodie, cookerina and someone who loves the outdoors, I am going goose hunting this November and I am PSYCHED. I have spent quite a bit of time deciding how I'm going to cook my goose...

I think it's really important that people realize where food comes from, and how gory getting meat in particular, really is.

    @flaxen_vixen: Yay, goose hunting!

I'm more into deer and pheasant, but every year we try for the geese.

And I agree, if you are going to eat it, you should know where it comes from and how it got there.

One of the times that my father was most disappointed in me was when I, at age 12, informed him that I was not going to take gun safety classes and go deer hunting with him. He still asks me if I want to go most years. Deer hunting with your dad is the northern Wisconsin version of playing catch.

@morninggloria: I am from idaho and the custom is the same there except with pheasant. In grade school my dad would always bring me pheasant hunting with him. I refused to be near anything gun related so he would have me ride in the back of the truck. My job was to make sure the dead birds didn't spill out the back when we went through pot holes. For some reason he thinks I liked this and every year asks if I want to come home for a weekend during pheasant season. Yeah dad...

These women are hunting for wild boars in outer Mongolia. Armed only with spears and machetes, at least according to my imagination. I mean, look at that monster. It wants to eat you. Being a female chef in the first place is something that takes an extraordinary amount of guts (no pun intended) and gumption, but now I'm convinced that these women could take over the world.

@Yahtzii: I don't know how my text got like that, but I'll take it. It's red. Red like the blood of a monstrous wild pig. Something about those guys is just a serious argument about vegetarianism to me. If you don't eat them, they WILL eat you first.

@Yahtzii: We have Russian boar here in Texas and it's like hunting a Yugo with legs (or being hunted by, considering).

And don't bother climbing a tree to get away. It will just chew the tree down.

When I read "hunt for meat," the first thing that came to mind was going to a bar at about an hour before close.

So awesome that they're out hunting for meat. I think all of us who eat meat really have to acknowledge where our food comes from, and be thankful of the role we play in nature and in the cycle of life.

@inabook: I got a lot of respect for Anthony Bourdain after I read A Cook's Tour and he was made to slaughter his own pig before cooking it. He made that very same point: if you're gonna eat meat, you have to remember that it comes from animals.

@save jinger: That's the closest I get to hunting, too. If I actually tried, I'd probably end up shooting my foot off instead of dinner. I might be too clumsy to be allowed near guns...

    I'll stick with my ignorance.

My food comes in a box that I take off a shelf, bring home add water, and presto. Food.

My hunger problem for the day is solved.

Now... if only I could work the same magic in my <3 life...

@DinaRonson : Elizabeth Cady Stanton: That would be great. Go to grocery store, take boxed man off shelf, bring home, add water, and presto change-o you have yourself boyfriend.

And hey if it doesn't work out you know never to get that brand again.

@Penny: My friend's old employer designed her new restaurant, Tavern in Brentwood. He drove me by it to show me and Suzanne was actually behind the restaurant in her whites and with gloves on talking to someone. I got so excited! She actually works in the kitchen, not just overseeing and letting someone else take over.

@Penny: She kind of does-- four restaurants is it now? And I think I heard another is in the works.

And I made a recipe from the Sunday Suppers etc cookbook recently-- my first attempt from the book-- and it was so awesome that I keep thinking about it. All the time.

@Atomic Monkey Mouse: It's my FAVORITE cookbook. It's not too intimidating but still helps me explore new techniques and flavors. Everything I have made from the book has been super delicious.

I had no idea she had more than 2 restaurants, that's great!
