I've never watched Lipstick Jungle, so for a second I thought that guy on the right was Scott Speedman (a.k.a. Ben from Felicity). I got really excited and rushed over to IMDB...only to discover that it's not my beloved Ben. So yeah, I won't be tuning in to help save the show. Oh well.

I was watching the hell out of it before they brought in the token "fat" client for Victory to freak out over."Oh but you have such a pretty face!" "Oh you have killer clavicles." Barf.

The Nielsen people and the networks really need to figure out how to incorporate both DVR and online viewing into their calculations. Geez.

@Kivrin: The Nielsen system is pretty antiquated. Given the number of digital devices on which you can view TV media (Internet, DVR, satellite, etc.), there has to be a more accurate way to track viewership than the old set-top boxes and diaries. Frankly, in a few years, I don't think A.C. Nielsen will be relevant anymore.

@nanner36: Well then people are going to stop watching network TV period if the execs keep cancelling decent shows, so...I'm sure the advertisers will be really happy then!

I agree that it's a conundrum, and I'd be pretty pissed if I were in advertising...but they simply have to evolve. Stop trying to impede technological progress and start thinking about how to adapt. (Same goes for the automakers.)

@Kivrin: Nielsen does track DVR watching within 3 days. However you do need to be a Nielsen "family" to have those viewings count.

Online/internet TV is completely different in the ad revenue world. Ultimately, it is about the advertisers and what $ the networks can generate. In the next few years the networks will figure out how to incorporate digital and traditional TV - they'll have to to remain competitive.

(This is closely related to what I do for a living, so I can go on all day).

@jennilyn: Yeah, I used to work in marketing, so I'm familiar with the concept of certain ad space/media being more attractive to advertisers. I just think it should be obvious to everyone -- advertisers and TV execs alike -- that the TV-watching landscape has changed dramatically, and they need to start trying to adapt instead of hanging on to the same old ways of doing business. I know it's happening, but it seems to be happening quite slowly. And the fact that NBC is basically encouraging people to change their habits if they want to save their show? Feels manipulative and desperate.

@Kivrin: Sorry, that last post sounded bitchy -- I was just trying to say that while I don't know everything about TV advertising, I did spend several years working in the marketing dept for a company that advertises heavily both online and on TV. So I feel like I have enough knowledge to criticize the advertisers and TV execs on this issue. That's all. :)
