What it actually exposes: the anti-choice movement's smear tactics.

The undercover video, organized by the group Live Action, of which Lila Rose is president, and posted on Michelle Malkin's blog, purports to catch Planned Parenthood employees in a variety of lies. Below, we break down some of Live Action's claims.

Claim 1: Planned Parenthood lied about the distinction between a fetus and a baby.

Abby Johnson, the Planned Parenthood director-turned-anti-abortion activist, says, "Planned Parenthood really tries to instill in their employees and the women that are coming in for abortions that this is not a baby." Obviously, the fetus/baby distinction is a key part of the abortion debate. A Planned Parenthood doctor does appear to muddy the waters a bit when he says on camera that a fetus becomes a baby "when you're like seven months pregnant or so. Six, seven months pregnant." This does indeed sound arbitrary and confusing. Another Planned Parenthood employee gives a better response:

A fetus is what's in the uterus right now. That's not a baby. A baby is what's born at forty weeks.

No matter what you believe about abortion, "fetus" is the correct medical term for the developmental stage between embryo and birth. If anti-abortion activists don't want to use it, that's up to them — but it's not a lie.

Claim 2: Planned Parenthood misled women about the risks of abortion.

The video shows the Planned Parenthood doctor telling his patient that an abortion at around ten weeks is "very, very safe. Safer than having a baby, actually." Michelle Malkin calls this "abortion-first 'counseling' by a "ghoulish abortionist." Here's the most recent data: in 2002, the CDC recorded 9 deaths out of 845,573 abortions. That's a little over 1 in 100,000. Also in 2002, the CDC recorded 8.9 maternal deaths for every 100,000 live births. So, at least in 2002, carrying a child to term was about 9 times more dangerous than having an abortion. Of course, we might be able to reduce maternal mortality if we implemented the "Demcare" Michelle Malkin hates so much. But for now, the idea that abortion is safer than having a baby isn't "abortion-first" rhetoric — it's the truth.

Claim 3: Abortion is an industry designed to help organizations like Planned Parenthood make money.

In the video, Abby Johnson says Planned Parenthood is "really trying to increase their abortion numbers because that is the most lucrative part of their business." This claim is common — back in 2008, an ad for Republican Senate contender Steve Pearce called Planned Parenthood "a billion-dollar abortion business." Here's what FactCheck.org has to say about that:

That's misleading. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization with gross revenues of nearly a billion dollars, but abortions account for a small fraction of the services it provides – 3 percent in 2006, according to the group's annual report.

It's important to reiterate that Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit, so nobody's getting rich off the abortions it provides. And especially in the wake of Dr. Tiller's murder, you'd have to be crazy to become an abortion provider for the money. The occupation isn't particularly lucrative, especially given the constant risk of social stigma, property damage, psychological trauma from dealing with protesters, and even death. But of course, Lila Rose and Michelle Malkin aren't interested in portraying the difficulties faced by those who continue to offer women reproductive choices despite mounting obstacles. They're interested in demonizing those people — even if they have to stretch the truth to do it.

<![CDATA[Sarah Palin Warns Of Pro-Choice "Mind-Set"]]> According to Politico, Sarah Palin held a fundraiser in West Allis, Wisconsin last night and attempted to convince thousands of supporters that legislators with pro-choice views might have "the mindset" that leads them to deny insurance coverage for the elderly.

You see, in Palin's eyes, anyone who supports a woman's right to choose apparently might have "the mind-set" that allows them to pull the plug on Grandma or force women to terminate pregnancies if the baby is not, in Palin's words "normal or perfect." It is, of course, another attempt on Palin's behalf to scare the shit out of people with her "death panel" nonsense, and her attempt to step it up a notch by tying in her stance on abortion rights (or, rather, lack thereof) just makes things more repulsive. "In order to save government money, government health care has to be rationed," Palin told the crowd, "[so] than this elderly person that perhaps could be seen as costing taxpayers to pay for a non-productive life? Do you think our elderly will be first in line for limited health care?"

Palin also took the time to drop this laughable statement: "It is so bogus that society is sending a message right now and has been for probably the last 40 years that a woman isn't strong enough or smart enough to be able to pursue an education, a career and her rights and still let her baby live." You know what else is bogus? That Sarah Palin continues to position herself as a savior of women's rights when her entire platform essentially rests on taking them away.

<![CDATA[Fake Blood, Baby Dolls, & Judge Sotomayor: Anti-Choice Activist Turns Hearing Into Comeback Tour]]> Randall Terry (pictured, left), former head of anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, is trying to make a comeback at the Sotomayor confirmation hearings. That comeback includes baby dolls smeared with fake blood, and a follower dressed as Sotomayor the Grim Reaper.

Terry fell afoul of Operation Rescue in the late '90s and early '00s, when lawsuits bankrupted him (many of them over his illegal blocking of clinics) and he left his wife for a much younger woman. Now he hopes to found a new organization, Operation Rescue Insurrecta Nex ("Insurrection Against Death"), and apparently wants to use the Sotomayor hearings as a springboard. He says,

If child killing is going to be ended, the road goes though this capital, and I intend to be a part of that movement. "And I intend to lead — to be a key leader of that movement. And I am.

Terry has always seen himself as the rightful center of attention — he founded Operation Rescue after a "vision" in which he saw himself on Donahue. And his methods have always been gruesomely theatrical — he had a dead fetus mailed to President Clinton, and he and his followers sometimes chained themselves to abortion equipment. Now, his props of choice are fake blood — smeared on copies of the Roe v. Wade decision and on baby dolls — and a sickle, completing the outfit of a fellow protester dressed as the Grim Reaper in judge's robes. "You gotta admit," says Terry, "the Grim Reaper sickle is a good effect."

To most, Terry's antics probably seem both offensive and opportunistic. But Dahlia Lithwick of Slate finds them refreshing. At least, she argues, the anti-abortion protesters at the hearing are saying what they mean. (There have been five arrested so far.) She takes Lindsey Graham to task for smiling and proclaiming that he "likes" Sotomayor, while asking questions that imply he "feels that Sotomayor wants to take the law away from him and give it away to other, different people." And she says Sotomayor "dodges, hedges, and evades her way through softball and hardball questions alike," though she acknowledges this is "to be expected." Of Terry and his ilk, on the other hand, she writes,

The reason I like the abortion protestors so much is that they come into the hearing room all stealthy and then yell precisely what they feel. It's true, everyone in the press corps now watches each new crop of civilian spectators like hawks as they rotate in; we're all wondering which sweet-faced person will erupt in a torrent of hate and rage and get dragged away. The protesters are, in a way, the mirror image of the nominee who must nod and smile sympathetically as she is insulted and second-guessed. But we'll never know what she's really thinking or even what the senators are really thinking. We all just smile and talk.

Sincere as he may be, we should recognize Terry for what he is — a failed bigot trying to crawl back into the spotlight any way he can.

<![CDATA["Christian Grifter" Apologizes For Fake Doll-Baby Hoax]]> In a post titled "i am sorry," "April's-Mom" wrote, "I know this post will not change what has been done. I don't expect it to, but I do hope it helps with some of the hurt that I have caused."

Said Rebeccah Beushausen, the suburban Chicago woman whose faux-pregnancy with a terminally ill baby spawned legions of (now-disillusioned) supporters:

I am a 26 year old woman who loves to draw and paint. I've worked for years in the social service (not a licensed social worker; never said I was) field. I am a Christian and while I wrote many of my posts under dishonest contexts, the God I shared with all of you and wrote about is still God; the Creator or life, Father and Savior. I hope to regain my relationship back with Him, fully, myself....In my life I've had good days and I have also dealt with a lot of pain, including the sorrow over the loss of life, among a lot of other things. I don't say that to garner your sympathy or to lessen your anger. I say it because it is true. Was the loss present day? - No. But true, none the less. In my "calendar past," perhaps, but still very much so in my present day to day...I lied and I am not trying to hide that, nor am I trying to minimize it. Worse still, I lied to a community of people whose only intention was to support me through this time and that is wrong, and for that I am sorrier than you could know.

While Beushausen's post, which went up on Sunday, acknowledges that the apology doesn't "excuse" the deception, she explains rather vaguely that "I have suffered this type of loss, more than once, to varying degrees" and that, while the actual sick baby April Rose may not have existed, the emotions did! And she denies vehemently that she made a financial profit:

I received a limited number of gifts through my P.O. box. A baby hat, a pair of little shoes, a hair bow, a crocheted blanket, to name a few. I never once received a check or cash in the mail. Ever. (I have not been to my P.O. box in over a week and will not be going back.

And in an act of either good faith or extreme insensitivity, she gives a link to a site "which highlights nearly 100 real families of real T13 babies presently living with this disease or struggling with such a diagnosis. These women and families and little ones need a lot of support."

That she's a graceful, convincing writer is not in question - indeed, it's kind of the issue. So while the "sociopath" or "sad" question is still unanswered, and it's hard not to think there's a bit of both in there. For those supporters who were willingly moved by Beushausen's writing for months - the very people to whom the post is addressed - this heartstring-tugging apology may not go very far. Says one Christian blogger who promoted "April's Mom," "To be honest, I think she is far from recognizing the true gravity of the situation."

Whatever the depth - or the cause - of Beushausen's pain, according to CBS she's disconnected her phone number and moved in with her mother. Whether her safety is actually in question, some people may call for their pounf of flesh. But, say lawyers, this will be tricky: the lack of substantial monetary profit (she didn't make money off her site's ad, given that it didn't get the required 45 days' exposure), the difficulty of determining jurisdiction, and the still-vague nature of internet law would make prosecution pretty much a non-starter. It seems pretty clear that the only real "results" of the episode are going to be a lot of anger and resentment - and that's the last thing anyone needs. (Caveat: we hope these are the only results. But the horrible spectre of a book deal always looms.)

<![CDATA[Dr. Warren Hern: "It Is Terrifying And It's Infuriating. There's No Excuse For This."]]> Dr. Warren Hern, a physician who provides late-term abortions, is threatened on a daily basis by anti-choice protesters. In this clip, from last night's PBS special, "Are Some Anti-Abortion Attacks Domestic Terrorism?" Hern shares his thoughts on the matter.

The entire 25-minute video, posted below, is worth watching; it's an incredibly powerful piece that shows just how brave these doctors have to be simply to provide a legal service to women on a daily basis. Along with Dr. Hern, the special also focuses on Dr. LeRoy Carhart, a colleague of Dr. Tiller's who gave the eulogy at Tiller's funeral and who, as Anna N. noted last Thursday, will be stepping in to fill Tiller's shoes.

This is not an easy piece to watch: the amount of hate that spews forth from a number of these anti-choice organizations, and the fact that they are allowed to continue with such behaviors, is, as Dr. Hern notes, incredibly terrifying and infuriating. However, the clip proves what we've known all along: that Dr. Hern and Dr. Carhart, as well as all of the other doctors, nurses, and clinic workers who risk their lives everyday simply to do their jobs are all amazing people, and their strength and dedication to providing a safe and legal option for women is a truly bright spot in an increasingly dark and frustrating chapter in American history.

<![CDATA[Anti-Abortion Blogger's Miracle Baby Was, In Fact, A Doll]]> '"I have that exact doll in my house," said Elizabeth Russell, a dollmaker from Buffalo who had been following the blog. "As soon as I saw that picture, I knew it was a scam."'

"April's Mom," a single mother whose blog chronicled her pregnancy with a child, terminally ill with Trisomy 13 and HPE, whom she was carrying to term, attracted the attention and support of abortion opponents across the country. Every day, thousands of people read about her commitment to keeping the baby, her struggles, her pain - all set to a Christian rock soundtrack and interspersed with Bible verses and anti-abortion links. They sent her stories and prayers, letters and gifts. As the site took off, she got links from other pro-life sites and a number of advertisers. Prominent pro-lifers added a "Pray for April Rose" button to their blogs. By the time "April's Mom" gave birth to the baby - who lived only a few hours - almost a million people were deeply invested in the story.

And so, when they realized it was an elaborate hoax, people were mad (albeit, in many cases, glad a baby hadn't died.) Suspicions were raised when the baby's description didn't match that of a child ill with Trisomy 13 and HPE, a red flag to those of her supporters who had dealt with the illness. Then April Rose looked suspiciously healthy. Then April Rose looked suspiciously like a doll*. These suspicions were confirmed when the author rushed to shut down the site, as well as her popular MYSpace and Twitter. And soon her identity was revealed: she was 26-year-old social worker Beccah Beushausen. Now, instead of checks and gifts, she's getting hate mail.

Beushausen says she feels bad, but that her acts were rooted in a real opposition to abortion - and that she drew on her experience of actually losing a son in 2005. Says the Chicago Tribune,

She had expected only a handful of friends to read it, but when her first post got 50 comments, she was hooked...."I've always liked writing. It was addictive to find out I had a voice that people wanted to hear," Beushausen said..."Soon I was getting 100,000 hits a week, and it just got out of hand, I didn't know how to stop. ... One lie led to another."

It's tempting of course to use this as a chance to take an easy bash at anti-choice, and revel in anything that makes them look foolish, but frankly, I'm just sad for this woman. Although the differences are obvious, in some ways, she's reminiscent of Ashley Todd (she of the inept self-mutilation) who saw the particularly emotional nature of people's political sympathies as an opportunity for attention. While these are deeply disturbed young women, it's also true that in both cases there were communities ready to embrace them ideologically, and that's no coincidence in a world where we see people galvanized by hate-speech and protests of the most lurid and distasteful kind. I don't take any pleasure in anyone extending prayers and thoughts to this woman and finding they were duped, especially those who actually went through the pain of losing a child. But the readiness to politicize, to use her pain and tragedy as a cause - and the anger at being duped, at finding that a baby did not, in fact die - is sobering. This woman saw there was rage and emotion to be harnessed, and she did. The found the attention and the approval - she was doing God's work, after all! - addictive. And that's the scary part.

*The doll in question was allegedly a Reborn. Our sources (aka, Wikipedia) say that "a reborn doll is a vinyl baby doll that has been enhanced to resemble a human baby. The process of creating a reborn doll is referred to as reborning."

<![CDATA["Pro-Life" Groups Continue To Threaten Clinics, Declare Violence "Inevitable"]]> On Wednesday, Rachel Maddow aired an excellent segment in which she reported on several more threats on abortion clinics. Not surprisingly, some pro-lifers are attempting to use the murder of Dr. Tiller for their own gain.

Maddow began by discussing the pro-life extremists who want to use Dr. Tiller's murder as a rallying point for their movement:

Mr. Troy Newman told "The Associated Press," quote, "I would love to make an offer on that abortion clinic and some of the discussion that we are having."

So, the official reaction of the super right-wing fringe to the assassination in its name, of its cause, is to make George Tiller‘s place of business a triumphant symbol for themselves, a symbol of their victory over the murdered doctor.

Maddow went on to interview Jennifer Boulanger, the director of the Allentown Women's Center, about threats the organization has received recently. Last Saturday, a man reportedly walked up to a volunteer working at the Allentown clinic and asked her, "How do you prefer to die, by knife or by bullet?" Boulanger says that since Tiller's death, she's been seeing more incidents like this:

We‘ve had malicious calls. Not a bomb threat but calls similar to the one you played in Texas. We‘ve had-we‘ve been targeted by a number of malicious calling events. We‘ve been targeted since the beginning of the year. I think abortion providers across the country have been targeted since Obama was inaugurated.

But now, since Dr. Tiller has been murdered, it‘s just-they feel even more empowered and we‘re seeing an anger that we‘ve never seen before.

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

But many pro-lifers don't seem too worried about the increased threats of violence being leveled at clinic workers. Yesterday afternoon, anti-abortion activist and former Operation Rescue leader Randall Terry hosted a press conference, complete with hot wings and beer, to discuss the pro-life movement, the murder of Dr. George Tiller, and the "role" of the Obama administration, which Terry says makes extreme and violent acts "inevitable." He expresses his hopes that Tiller's tragic slaying will "propel the movement forward and not backward, but it in part depends upon us" (full audio here, if you can stomach it). TPM reports:

Terry spent much of his presentation drawing a tortured analogy between abortion and slavery. Pro-life Americans, Terry said, are the ethical heirs of Northern abolitionists, who refused to flinch when the violent Nat Turner rebellion sent Southern slave owners into an angry panic. Tiller's murder, he reasoned, was like the Turner rebellion—the sort of event that becomes inevitable when systemic injustice thrives. "They want to blame our rhetoric," Terry said. "They don't want to face that child killing has something so insidious inside of it that it will boil over and create havoc and heartache and violence."

Right. So a woman's right to choose is somehow analogous with the institutionalized torture and bondage of sixty million and more who suffered under slavery? Okay.

And in other bad news, the Arizona Senate may pass legislation that would further restrict the availability of abortions. The two bills, which have been recommended for passage, would require women to undergo a 24-hour waiting period before undergoing the procedure, and would increase penalties for performing late-term abortions. The bills have already received tacit support from Republican Gov. Jan Brewer.

<![CDATA[Anti-Abortion Groups Split On Reaction To Tiller's Murder]]> The leaders of several prominent anti-abortion organizations have released statements on the murder of Dr. George Tiller. While some leaders have denounced the killing, others have taken the opportunity to continue to condemn Tiller's work.

Randall Terry, founder of the controversial anti-abortion organization Operation Rescue, released a horrifying, yet not surprising, statement on Tiller's murder earlier this morning.

"George Tiller was a mass-murderer. We grieve for him that he did not have time to properly prepare his soul to face God," Terry says, "I am more concerned that the Obama Administration will use Tiller's killing to intimidate pro-lifers into surrendering our most effective rhetoric and actions. Abortion is still murder. And we still must call abortion by its proper name; murder. Those men and women who slaughter the unborn are murderers according to the Law of God. We must continue to expose them in our communities and peacefully protest them at their offices and homes, and yes, even their churches."

The current director of Operation Rescue, Troy Newman, released a statement this morning showing a clear break from Terry, denouncing the murder: "We are shocked at this morning's disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down. Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning. We pray for Mr. Tiller's family that they will find comfort and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ."

Brian Kamper of the anti-abortion organization Stand True has also denounced the killing, claiming that "we cannot kill people in the name of pro-life. Answering the violence of abortion with more violence will not serve the babies or help the pro-life movement in any way."

Update: In case you were wondering how terrible some of these reactions have been, commenters over at Free Republic have already started posting comments such as "Why is the death of a satanic worshipper tragic?" and "May he rot in hell alongside the mothers who aided him in his "business."

Tiller's family has also released a statement:

Today we mourn the loss of our husband, father and grandfather. Today's event is an unspeakable tragedy for all of us and for George's friends and patients. This is particularly heart wrenching because George was shot down in his house of worship, a place of peace.

We would like to express the family's thanks for the many messages of sympathy from our friends and from all across the nation. We also want to thank the law enforcement officers who are investigating this crime.

Our loss is also a loss for the City of Wichita and women across America. George dedicated his life to providing women with high-quality heath care despite frequent threats and violence. We ask that he be remembered as a good husband, father and grandfather and a dedicated servant on behalf of the rights of women everywhere."

<![CDATA[Abortion Opponents Attack Planned Parenthood's Piggybank]]> Following last month's election of the resoundingly pro-choice Barack Obama, abortion opponents are trying a new strategy: attacking Planned Parenthood's financing rather than its mission. According to the Wall Street Journal, anti-choice activists want to stop the flow of government dollars to Planned Parenthood and are "arguing that the nonprofit group has plenty of cash and shouldn't be granted scarce public funds at a time of economic crisis."

The Journal reports that Planned Parenthood gets $335 million a year from the government, which is a third of its budget, and it also had a $115 million budget surplus last year. Indiana abortion foe Scott Tibbs tells the Journal,"The money needs to go to local organizations that actually need it and don't have the backing of a multimillion-dollar organization."

As has been noted before, less than 3-5% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortion related, and Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards says that in times of economic turmoil, people need Planned Parenthood's health care services the most. It's "a lifeline for millions of people," Richards tells the Journal, especially for those who have lost their health insurance along with their jobs.

It's unclear whether the lobbying efforts of groups like the Family Research Council will be successful in getting local governments to cut back on their Planned Parenthood funding; however, in the past few weeks, Atlanta and Sarasota area Planned Parenthoods have seen their local government funding scaled back. Sarasota's funding was cut from their sex-ed program, and former Sarasota county commissioner Paul Mercier says to the Journal, "It had nothing to do with Planned Parenthood's mission…It had everything to do with them not needing the funding."

<![CDATA[Virginia Pharmacy Proudly Refuses To Stock Birth Control]]> The common refrain at stores of even moderate decorum is no shirt, no shoes, no service. Well, a Virginia pharmacy has a far more insidious mantra: "No candy. No sodas. And no birth control." According to the AP the Divine Mercy Care Pharmacy in Chantilly, Virginia is the seventh pharmacy in the United States to be certified as birth control free by the group Pharmacists for Life International, though they estimate "perhaps hundreds of other pharmacies have similar policies."

So what's the big deal, you may think, this pharmacy is in the D.C. area, competing against thousands of pharmacies that do dispense birth control. But, as former Planned Parenthood lawyer Roberta Riley points out, "in parts of Montana, women must drive 80 miles to find a pharmacy willing to sell contraception," because so many pharmacists are practicing their "consciences."

What's more, as Tarina Keene, executive director of the Virginia chapter of NARAL notes, "If this emboldens other pharmacies in other parts of the state, it could really affect low-income and rural women in terms of access." But isn't denying women their prescriptions illegal? Well, it depends on where you live.

According to the AP, a Wisconsin state appeals court upheld sanctions against a pharmacist who wouldn't give a woman her birth control and wouldn't transfer the woman's prescriptions elsewhere (yay Wisconsin!). But according to Riley, who writes forWomen's E-news, a "ruling, issued in late 2007 by a lower court and now on appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, allows people who run pharmacies to refuse to dispense birth control based on their belief it kills the unborn." The Ninth Circuit Court covers California and the Pacific Northwest, as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Arizona, but it's headquartered in San Francisco, so fingers crossed that the pinko liberals will not allow pharmacists to continue refusing women their prescriptions.

What's most troubling about the Divine Mercy Care Pharmacy is that according to NARAL Virginia, the Birth Control Protection Act has failed to pass in the state for six years running, so refusing women their valid prescriptions is currently legal. To download the NARAL petition click here, or if you happen to live near Chantilly, drive by and give the Divine Mercy Care folks your divine middle finger.

<![CDATA[Black and Latina Women Aborting At Much Higher Rates Than Whites]]> In the first comprehensive analysis of abortion data since 1974, the Guttmacher Institute has found that while the overall abortion rate is down in the United States, black and Latina women are having abortions at five and three times the rate of white women, respectively, the Los Angeles Times reports. However, some health policy experts believe the reason these women are getting abortions at much higher rates has more to do with low incomes and limited access to health insurance than race. Planned Parenthood's VP of public policy, Laurie Rubiner, tells Newsweek, "When you don't have access to affordable birth control, rates of unintended pregnancy are going to be higher. That's a sad and real-life consequence of the health insurance gap."

Another new wrinkle in the analysis of recent abortion statistics is that women who have abortions now are much more likely to already be mothers than women who had abortions 30 years ago. Back then, most of the women getting abortions were teens and college students. According to NOW President Kim Gandy, "Women are making a decision, 'Can I feed another mouth? Did my husband leave me with three other kids? Is this going to mean that I can't feed my kids?' There is a real life decision that a woman has to make."

Day Gardner, the president of the National Black Pro-Life Union, claims that the number of inner city abortion clinics is the reason for higher rates of abortion among black women. She tells the L.A. Times, "It doesn't have as much to do with poverty as that the abortion facilities are there, ingrained in the neighborhoods." (Riiiight — these women are mere abortion pawns, not adults with their own agency who have made the choice that's right for them. Think of the children!) Unfortunately, the anti-choicers are getting their way in some cases, as University of Alabama assistant political science professor Michael J. New tells the Washington Post, "The states with the most active pro-life laws have seen the biggest abortion declines."

<![CDATA[Remember that infuriating memo draft from...]]> Remember that infuriating memo draft from the department of Health and Human services that was meant to protect the rights of anti-choice doctors but actually managed to define birth control as abortion? Well the real memo is out, and while it doesn't have language related to birth control, it still will allow doctors “to practice according to their conscience,” HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt says. “Doctors and other health care providers should not be forced to choose between good professional standing and violating their conscience. Freedom of expression and action should not be surrendered upon the issuance of a health care degree.” [HHS]

<![CDATA[Bush Administration Memo Tries To Define Birth Control As Abortion]]> There are 188 days left in the Bush administration, and it is becoming painfully clear that if George W. cannot end the war, or boost the economy, he'll sure as hell make it his mission to chip away at Roe vs. Wade. As Reuters reports, a leaked Department Of Health and Human Services memo describes a plan to cut off federal funds to states, hospitals and clinics that discriminate against employees who refuse to offer birth control or abortions on religious or moral grounds. As if that weren't bad enough, the proposal redefines all birth control as abortion. According to Reuters, in the memo, the HHS draft "proposes to define abortion as 'any of the various procedures — including the prescription and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action — that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation."

Reuters adds that the Department of Health and Human Services would not verify the contents of the widely-circulated memo, "but noted their responsibility to protect against discrimination of doctors and pharmacists who object to abortion or birth control on religious or moral grounds."

Pro-choice organizations and women all over the country are understandably up in arms over this. Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL, asks the New York Times, "Why on earth is the Bush administration trying to discourage doctors and clinics from providing contraception to women who need it?” Good question! Apparently, they're peeved over recent state laws, like Connecticut's 2007 legislation requiring hospitals to distribute Plan B to rape victims, and according to Reuters, the proposal was "specifically designed to counter" those laws. How convenient for Republicans to be in favor of states rights…for everything except a woman's right to choose!

And speaking of Republicans, NARAL's blog notes that while John McCain has yet to comment on this specific proposal, he has voted against choice 125 times in the Senate. It's obvious that the Bush administration will stand behind the straw man of "religious freedom" when defending this proposal, but if it's so concerned with religious freedom, why does this law only apply to birth control? Some Christian Scientists are against using modern medicine. So, by this logic, it would be discrimination to not hire a Christian Scientist because he or she refused to dole out insulin for diabetes, or declined to give a cancer patient chemo? Exactly. The only discrimination here is against a woman's right to choose.

<![CDATA[Portland Builder Drops Planned Parenthood For Fear Of Pro-Life Protesters]]> A Portland construction company has dropped out of its contract to build a local Planned Parenthood, the Oregonian reported on Monday. Bob Walsh, the owner of Walsh Construction, broke the contract after hearing about how aggressive and inappropriate anti-choice protesters had been towards other contractors building Planned Parenthoods across the country. And even though Walsh had no moral objections, according the Oregonian he said, "It's disruptive and very threatening. I just didn't want to put my family through that." And honestly? He has a point. If you'll recall, back in December Colorado anti-choicers picketed outside the homes of the contractors who were building a Denver Planned Parenthood. In fact, on Christmas morning the yahoos showed up at the contractor's home with signs depicting dead babies.

Despite the looming pro-life outcry, the Planned Parenthood building project will go forward. Sadly, one of the organizers of the forthcoming protests is a local science teacher, Bill Diss. Diss tells the Oregonian that Planned Parenthood is a "'killing center' that targets young girls, teaching them about sex and masturbation, which he calls 'the gateway drug to lust.'" (Now that would be a fantastic album title: Gateway Drug To Lust. I'm sure no one in the history of the world has discovered masturbation on her own, Bill. Why, masturbation didn't exist until Planned Parenthood was founded!) Diss continued to diss Planned Parenthood, saying, "They're up in North Portland targeting young black girls to get them into a life of sex." A life of sex? Don't most people end up having a "life of sex," ie, a sex life, regardless of Planned Parenthood's evil voodoo? It's always a shame that Planned Parenthood, whose work is 3% abortion, and the rest education and affordable medical care, has to suffer so many fools so much of the time.

<![CDATA["Pro-Life" Group Uses Dr. Seuss To Push Its Case]]> A pro-life group in Colorado has adopted the line "a person's a person, no matter how small" from Horton Hears a Who — which was turned into a song for the Broadway production Seussical the Musical — as a way to petition for a measure recognizing conception as the start of a human life. Such groups have been quoting this passage for years, despite the fact that both Dr. Seuss and his wife made it publicly clear they were not okay with that. (And rightly so: It's being used out of context and is about as inappropriate as Planned Parenthood taking on "Last Caress" — "I got something to say/ I killed your baby today/ And it doesn't matter much to me/ As long as its dead" — by the Misfits as a theme song.)

But it got me to thinking: What other songs could be used as ridiculous pro-choice anthems? The Smiths' "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish"? Or maybe Black Sheep's "The Choice Is Yours"? Earnest no-brainers: Aretha Franklin "Think (Freedom)" Bobby Brown "My Prerogative"

How about these:
Britney Spears "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman"

I'm not a girl,
Not yet a woman.
All I need is time,
A moment that is mine,
While I'm in between.
Janet Jackson "Control"
Got my own mind
I wanna make my own decisions
When it has to
do with my life,
my life
I wanna be the one in control
Not so literal:
Lil' Kim "Big Momma Thang"
And oh
Don't cha like the way I roll
And play wit my bushy
Tell me what's on your mind when your tongues in the pussy
Is it marriage?
Baby carriage?
Shit no, on a dime shit is mine
My abortion song, by title alone, would be:
Belle & Sebastian "Is it Wicked Not to Care?"

But actually, when I was undergoing an abortion about seven years ago, the radio was on, and, as they were prepping me for the anesthetic, the song that came on was "Sexual Healing." I remember staring up at the water stain on the drop-ceiling thinking, "You have got to be kidding me."
