If you look at the list of schools, it's not just public universities run by women, none of them are the flagship campus (except possibly Binghamton, but the SUNYs don't really have a flagship).

Montclair State, not Rutgers
University of Southern Mississippi, not Ole Miss

Whoever is giving the money, it seems they are really looking for schools with small endowments and big student bodies. The money is going where it is most needed.

So my current university is a public school run by a woman... where's our money? Not only that, they donated money to one SUNY school run by a woman, but not ours. I feel like there must be something else going into the choosing here.

@AnaNg: I was just glad that *a* SUNY school got some money. I know that the $1000 in extra tuition that I had to pay from fall to spring went directly to the state to help balance the budget, with absolutely nothing going to my program. And they cut proctors out for our exams, and refuse to kick the undergrads out of our library, so I don't even study there because there is never room. Er...anyway, the SUNY system in general could use some help!

I am really surprised by the great divide on this issue.

It is a gift. Not a tax-based, government program. And I kind of like the way this is shaping up-a lot of students (mostly female students) and schools are receiving some kind financial help AND there is a renewed awareness of the glass ceiling issue. This is a good thing! I go to a private college, with a male president, and we are having financial problems (like almost every other college or institution, it seems). But, I'm not going to begrudge these schools with female presidents. Sure, there are a lot of people who aren't going to get this (limited amount of money, but there are a lot of people who will!

@breeandcrackers: Seconded! This is actually kind of making me angry! Okay Jezzies when you become multi-millionaires give wherever the hell you want!

Personally, I will give to my male-lead fancy shmancy private university because they gave me a huuuge need-based scholarship that made the school cheaper than our public system. I met my bf there and he refuses to give to them because they made our (seriously disgusting) meal plan mandatory all four years. Yes, it's arbitrary, but when it's your own money, you can do what you want!

Aaaand yet another reason I don't like my college president. He makes millions (one of the highest-paid college presidents in the country), lives in a mansion owned and all expenses paid by the school, keeps putting money towards our shitty-ass football team, and recently told students that the 14% tuition increase was "reasonable". And they're cutting TA positions all over the place.

I mean, I love the Dawgs - but let's look at our softball team, our crew team - hell, our marching band! But seriously, perhaps the money should instead be going to fund scholarships for promising female students or to endow outreach programs in fields where women are underrepresented.

A female figurehead, be it at a university or of a country, implies little about outcomes for the women that populate it. That is one form of trickle-down feminism I find dubious.
