Help me out here. I'm not sure why we're making fun of Miz Hathaway for voicing a political opinion. Why does someone have to be active in a politician's political campaign to criticize a move he makes? As Jezzies, don't we kind of endorse women being informed and opining. Do we really just want her to look pretty and keep her mouth shut? I don't.

makes me glad to be a marylander now. don't have to go to work, but don't have to deal with that road mess or metro.

ok, i don't want the fbi to call me or anything, but wasn't there a bio-terrorism thing in japan a few years ago on the subway? i haven't heard anything about metro security and it would seem like an opportune time to do an attack that way, if one were so inclined. what is going on with that?

I am in DC and very curious as to how they are going to try and manage security.

@LaFemme: DC Metro is one of the safest in the country in terms of bioterror attack, some pioneering work was done there. That said, I will be in the area but not going anywhere near a Metro, a bridge, a road, or even a car. But only because holing up in a hotel room with wine and a big-screen tv is way preferable, not because of incident-fear.

@SomeAuthorGirl: i guess that's good, but maybe they should mention some of the safety measures on the news or remind people that metro is safe from attack. really the only security thing i've heard about recently is how they talked about doing random bag searches a few months ago but they haven't done any yet. that wasn't even related to the inauguration. just from riding experience it seems like the only thing they do is stop trains or send them back mid-run if something goes wrong, like a fire. they don't have sidings or anything like that to move a broken train to.

@linnyt: I think they don't like to publicize them since then someone can try to come up with workarounds, but I remember reading about some pioneering work that was done with the DC metro security-wise. It's all things you can't see and don't know are there, and I believe this is where they first tested "sniffers" for chemical and biological warfare agents.

Ugh. I wish people would stop being snide about the Blair House thing without actually talking about the facts.

It's not about who is staying there. There are several important events that were booked at Blair House WELL before Obama was even elected. The house is available for the Obamas to move in five days before the election, as is tradition, and the outgoing administration was not able to move events that have been planned months or even years in advance in order to accomodate the girls school schedule.

By all accounts (including Obama's own) the Bushes have been incredibly welcoming and helpful during the transition. So this is really a non-story that the media seems to have jumped on in order to create a little more Bush hate before he leaves office.

Bush was certainly not a good president, and I think pretty much most of the country is glad to see him leave the White House. But these petty accusations don't make him look bad - they just make the people making them look bad.

And even so there are events going, the former Prime Minster of Australia gets vacancy over the Obama family? Tony Blair was invited to stay at Blair House at declined and is staying somewhere else. It is such a slap in the face to the Obamas to decline their offer but then ask someone else to stay after weeks after.

@formergr: Yup. It is a complex of 4 townhouses. 14 guest bedrooms, eight staff bedrooms, 35 bathrooms, four dining rooms, kitchen facilities, laundry and dry-cleaning facilities, an exercise room, a flower shop and a fully equipped hair salon.

But a family of four is just too much. But hey, the Former Prime Minster of Australia and his entourage should get lodging even though the Obamas asked weeks before Bush invited the former PM to stay.

I do think that the symbolism of a Warren prayer is significant, and not in a good way. I can only imagine what I would feel if I were gay.

But it's symbolism *only,* whereas Brad Kiley is actually going to be doing shit, and important shit at that. I also think it's incredibly significant that on their online application form (no, I can't imagine how I would know this information, it just came to me in the night!), the transition team very specifically added "sexual orientation" to the list of "we do not discriminate on the basis of..." -- needless to say, the first Administration to do so.

He refuses to meet with NAACP on numerous occasions, Katrina, wanted to get rid of Affirmative action( which is fine if that is someone's opinion but he used race baiting tactics to try and get people against AA all the while strongly encourages legacies), pushing black and Hispanic names off voter rolls in Florida during 2000, etc.

And just because he has Mexican relatives does not mean he isn't racist just like having a sister does not exempt one being a sexist.
