Aw! This makes me sad. Both my kitties are black cats adopted from the ASPCA. I had no idea that people usually don't adopt black cats. It's weird that people still have that superstition. My kitties are awesome and sweet. #blackcats
My family's black-and-grey tabby, Jasper Maxwell, passed away on Saturday morning after 15 and a half years of tormenting everyone. I've moved out and have a furbaby of my own now, but he was mine, too.
I really wish family pets would stop dying in my poor dad's arms. He's such a softy, and it's taking its toll -- especially considering that a friend's Siberian Husky died in his arms on Monday afternoon. (My dad isn't exactly having the best week.) #blackcats
We adopted our girl around Halloween time a few years ago. Our shelter had a strict No Black Cats in October policy. They wouldn't even tell you if they had any. It's such a shame the lengths they had to go to in order to protect those cats from crazies. #blackcats
I adopted my Jack this time last year (after my grey fur monster Roxie died in September). He was the last of a litter at the animal shelter and had only known life in a cage since there were no foster families available at the time.
The hoops I had to jump through because I wanted to adopt a black cat during Halloween week! They called my landlord, my boss and my vet! The cat counselor told me that black cats are almost impossible to adopt out....except during Halloween week and then they have to be extra careful to make sure they go good and proper homes.
It was totally worth it. Jack is my panther (and this week, my Halloween kitty with an orange collar) and I wouldn't have it any other way :)
If I'm uploading a picture right (and I haven't been for awhile now) its from his first day home. I love this picture, he looks so content to final belong somewhere and have a family. #blackcats
We have a black Manx cat named Max, and he is the sweetest, most loving cat I have ever known. He loves being held like a human baby, and never stops purring. He is constantly head butting for nose kisses.
He does have an odd anxiety issue, I think because of my Mom's crazy Pug, so he at times needs meds to keep him calm. #blackcats
Always around Halloween, I get asked to make sure my pretty little Neko doesn't get out. I mean, who would want to hurt this precious little furball? #blackcats
@dirtybee: HA! that's exactly what my black cat (also a Bombay, which it looks like your Neko is) does! The foot thing, I mean. Maybe it's a trait particular to that breed? #blackcats
@ElleL: Thanks! :-) @likepenguins: You know, I have no idea but she really digs petting herself with ANYONE'S foot. It's so weird! @huls: Haha no she doesn't but my other cat Luna does. She plays fetch with my hairbands - I have an endless supply stocked since I find at least 2 in her food bowl, torn to shreds. #blackcats
My best friends growing up were my two black cats. One had a big white spot on her belly so I don't know if she counts, but the other was a big, furry ball of pure black. He was temperamental but not mean; and as he got older he was SO much more affectionate (to the point of drooling when you pet him. He also snored, which was adorable). He was also the cutest fluffiest kitten I had ever seen with a love for climbing up curtains and the pant leg of anyone he caught washing dishes. God I miss that cat. #blackcats
I poke, toss, cuddle, and otherwise annoy my black cat equally during all times of the year. It's the only way.
Actually, I only got him because he was the last one left. People actually passed over the most affectionate ball of purrs I have ever met because his fluff is dark like the night. I got a call from the vet saying hey, you know that black kitten we weren't going to let you have because you're in an illegal sublet and we can't check with your landlord? Want him? #blackcats
@SlayBelle: My cousin has a cat named No-Name. She was going to wait to name him once she figured out what fit his personality, but No-Name stuck. Her vet couldn't quite grasp that No-Name was his actual name, so at the vet, he goes by Pas-de-nom, which is French for No-Name. #blackcats
When I was six, my mom took me to the vet to pick out a kitty (I guess my vet did pound duty. I don't remember the details--I was six). It was a couple of days before Halloween, and I wanted the black one (mainly because she was the only kitten in the joint). He had been my family's vet for years, and a six year old was picking out the kitty with her mom, so he probably decided it was safe. We got her home, and my mom lobbied to name her Elvira (it was the late 80's). I would not be swayed--her name was (and is) Catnip. I had no sense of imagination. Catnip is now 18 years old, and has done her Halloween duty of looking menacing from the front window dutifully for almost two decades, now! #blackcats
I head locked my sister into adopting a black kitty. Citing that she probably won't ever get adopted because she is a black cat. Now my sister has a cat that likes to run in circles in her tub at 2am. My evil sister ways work even unintentionally. #blackcats
My family's old black cat was the most bad ass MoFo in the whole kittyverse. Named Beau, he lived for 21-human-years. My parents got him after they were married and would take him hiking in the mountains and would let the KITTEN run along the trail without a leash, playing hide 'n seek with them. Later, when I was a little kid, he lost one eye in a big neighborhood cat fight where he took on about five tomcats, and afterwards none of the other neighborhood cats would come around our house cause they knew he'd be all "Bish I Will Cut U." But he never once scratched or even hissed at me, and was the sweetest and most loving family pet. And then one day, when we noticed he'd stopped eating any food or catching any animals, the vet found out it was due to cancer in his throat and we had to euthanize him. On Christmas Eve.
@alouette: Beau(regarde in full) was the stuff of legends, and if it weren't for cancer he probably would've lived even longer. His passing broke my 10-year-old heart. The only solace: I then had permission to throw my little indoor cat, Daisy, out of the house so she could go get knocked up wit moar kittehs. #blackcats
I love my black cats more than any other human I have ever met and if anyone EVER tried to harm them I would rip out one of their vital organs and bash them repeatedly around the head with it.
Portia - a stray who came to us completely de-clawed (front and back - GRRRRRR), starving, and practically bald - she has since recovered all of her hair and is fat and happy if a bit decrepit.
Mab - daddy's girl through and through and one of the loveliest little souls I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. She makes sure everyone has a face wash before dinner.
Ash - his mother came to us while very preggers and starving - we think the starvation caused some brain damage in Ash who was the smallest of the kittens and developmentally behind the rest.
All of these are indoor cats so there's no way anyone's going to get their sick ass hands on them. They're my babies, and I think about the only thing the hubbs would kill over. #blackcats
@SidheDragon: Good for you. I take care of a colony of ferals and a couple are black or mostly black. I worry for them whenever this time of year rolls around. Their saving grace is that since they're feral, they're afraid of people (aside from me), so they're not usually close enough to people that may want to harm them. #blackcats
@WashingMyHair: You should look and see if there are any programs in your neighborhood for fixing feral cats. I took in two feral cats and was able to get them both fixed for 30 bucks total! They do clip the top of the ear, but it is only because that is the universal sign that the cat has been fixed so if the pound ever finds them they will never be put down because they are not a problem since they can't reproduce. It is an awesome program! #blackcats
@WashingMyHair: Thanks! And good on you for caring for the colony. I fear for any animal truly and not just at this time of year, though as we know it is worse at this time of year. The hubbs and I are cat enthusiasts really. We joke that if Bast continues to send us her tired and poor could she send a little cash along too. Funny though, we always seem to have enough to feed them and keep them healthy. Now if she'd just send us along a bigger house we could take more in! #blackcats
@missheidilynn: No worries! I do rescue and actually started an TNR program for the town I live in. All of my ferals are healthy and have been TNR'd for years.
Sadly, I live in a county that doesn't care about ear tipped ferals. They'll still put them down. I'm working with a group to lobby against that, but it's a long, long battle
@SidheDragon: Fortunately, the ear tipping isn't so bad for the cat. They to the cut in an area of the ear where it's minimally painful and heals quickly. #blackcats
@WashingMyHair: That is frustrating that they will still put them down! The whole point is so that we can be no-kill. Feral cats can be very independent and if they are not reproducing why can't they just live their happy lives!
I hope that your hard work succeeds on protecting all of our fixed feral cats! #blackcats
@SidheDragon: Ya it kind of sucks, but at least the cats can live happily. It is really popular to, when I went that day there were people who had like 5 cats with them to get fixed. I am happy that other people are as passionate about it as I am! #blackcats
@Lymed: ha! While Mab's name is taken from the Bard, Portia's actually started out as Porch-a because she lived on our porch until we could make sure she wouldn't make all our other people in the house sick (this was the hubbs' idea). So when she was cleared I revised her name to something more civilised and less silly having forgotten completely about the Bard's Portia. #blackcats
@SidheDragon: The Bard has two Portia's. Most people think of Portia from the Merchant of Venice. But Portia from Julius Caeser is my favorite of the Bard's characters. #blackcats
Gah. I desperately want a cat, but have NO time for one. (No, seriously.)
Also, I'm adding "The Poor, Neglected Harbingers of Evil" to my list of possible band names. #blackcats
