And I know, I know, nobody wants to click away when they're in the middle of chatting here on Jezebel, but if you're AT ALL an Ani fan, it will make your day, I PROMISE. I practically widdled myself when I saw it. You'll see. Queer humour, I think I love you.

As a special bonus, the little clip also contains footage of my pretend boyfriend BRET MCKENZIE of Flight of the Conchords pantsing somebody. Classic.

Oh man, I MISS my high school days of singing along to Ani with my best friend. Those were good times. To this day, I can't drink bad diner coffee without thinking of "...where the coffee is just water dressed in brown..."

Am I the only huge Ani fan who is totally cold towards Indigo Girls? I was a real oddity at Mount Holyoke because of that.

@sarah.of.a.lesser.god (subservient to the ovumlord): The Indigo Girls are such a completely different band (the only real common thread between them and Ani is that they're both folk-ish and slightly outside the mainstream of music) that it would shock me if you were the only one. Personally, I prefer the Indigo Girls...but I'm a guy and there's only so many times I can listen to some of her stuff before I start to hate my entire gender.

I also taught myself how to play guitar on Indigo Girls songs (early Amy stuff is either G/C/D or E/A/Sometimes D), so there's a nostalgic connection.

@Magnakai Haaskivi: there's only so many times I can listen to some of her stuff before I start to hate my entire gender HA! Yeah, they are very different but it never seemed to be a musical Venn Diagram among my friends -- you either loved both Ani and the Indigo Girls, or you hated them both. I also get curious stares for loving Lord of the Rings and not giving two shits about Harry Potter.

@sarah.of.a.lesser.god (subservient to the ovumlord): Ahh, the debates of my Wellesley past . . . I'm not a huge Indigo Girls fan, will listen, don't love. LOVE Ani. This was considered bizarre. Oh well. I just always loved that every year we would have 2 concerts on campus catering to different tastes/communities in a very stereotypical way. Best example, one year the two shows were Indigo Girls and Wyclef.

@Spaceman Bill Leah: Dar Williams is FANTASTIC. The songwriting's not terribly consistent, but it's VERY honest, and she's the only songwriter who's actually made me get choked up...and that holds up every time I hear some of her songs (most notable, I cry at the end of "When I Was a Boy" and the end of "What Do You Hear in These Sounds?" when she's talking about feeling like East Berlin).

You absolutely have to check her out...her earlier stuff's better than her more recent stuff.

I was a pretty big Ani fan, but really anything past "Up Up Up Up Up Up" hasn't done it for me. Once she started moving away from the thrashing acoustic guitar stuff and started mellowing into horn and string arrangements, something really stopped clicking for me.

@Magnakai Haaskivi: Agreed. I can't quite tell if I just grew out of that stage (needing an angry female musician) or if her music just changed enough that I no longer liked it. I am still female-centric in my music tastes for the most part but I haven't bought a new Ani in at least 5 years.

I'm going to tell the painful truth here: I have always had a violent allergy to her. My college roommate tried to educate me, but I don't know. I respect the quality of her songs, but they do NOTHING for me. I can't imagine just hanging out listening to them. Maybe writing about them for a course...

@Sammypants: I was at a concert there a few weeks ago - it's gorgeous. You should especially check out the bar area downstairs and the offices if you can get a peek in there (I had seen them before they were finished).

@thelawschooldropout: Get the album Living in Clip - it's 2 CDs of live Ani - sort of a "best of" her earlier stuff.

There's at least 2-3 songs on each album that I really like, so that's a tough choice...

But I think my 2 favorites of all would be "Gravel" and "Overlap."
