The more Stephanie Meyer quotes I read, the more she scares me.
Would it be presumptuous to assume Mr. Pattison ought also to be afraid, lest he wake up one morning (or afternoon) covered with sparkles and unable to get away?
"Leona Lewis has turned down a $1 million offer to pose for Playboy. "
Is this some sort of rite of passage or something? Every time I read Playboy has made that offer, the celeb in question has turned it down.
Even in a recession.
@BowlingForDollars: Am I horrible for having chuckled out loud, with an undertone that could arguably have been described as malicious, after I read this? #angelinajolie
That is actually very polite of Vivid to ask her first. In my mind she has a tantrum at them and they accidentally release it with all the royalties going to a Vivid subset which isn't technically affiliated with Vivid and disappears when Prejean tries to sue it. Don't tantrum with porn companies.
@Snowbunny: I would say rather than being polite, it was just their standard way of drumming up more press. They have done that before. "Polite" and porn rarely go together!
@Snowbunny: I thought she was supposed to be 17 when all of this went down. That makes it pretty creepy to me. She's an idiot, but we do have laws. Even if she was 18, I think it's horrible and exploitative to release these images that were made for her boyfriend. She's hypocritical, but that doesn't mean that the world needs to see them. I just hope no one buys her book. #angelinajolie
@acookieaday: She wasn't 17, she was in her 20's. She tried to get her boyfriend to lie about her being 17 so they wouldn't get released. #angelinajolie
Big fail, Oprah audience. Haha, this mentally unstable man who beat his ex-wife, raped a woman, and bit a guy's ear off says he wants to punch his ex-wife! What a card!!! #angelinajolie
@Maritsa: I hope it was just a nervous chortle. It's not at all funny for a man that used to beat his ex to make a joke about wanting to beat his ex. #angelinajolie
@rd2uk: I have to hope (foolishly) that it's pronounced the way it's spelled. I think that if parents spell their kids names strangely, the name should be pronounced as it's spelled. But people don't do that. They really seem to believe that if you spell something funny, it's still the same name. And that's not necessarily the rule.
For example, Addisynne is not Addison, Serah is not Sarah (although it's darn close), Sha is not Shay, and Courtenay is not Courtney. #angelinajolie
@rd2uk: @elijabet: It might feel good to be a bit more generous about other people's naming traditions, eh? They're not always to your taste (or mine) but snidely proscribing them is fairly unpleasant behaviour, you know? #angelinajolie
@rd2uk: That's exactly how it sounds. I knew a type-A mother who named her daughter that (the better to stand out on college applications!) who jaw would tense up anytime you dared call her precious snowflake "Courtney". #angelinajolie
@GrabAnApple: I don't understand comments like this, insulting parents for the name they gave their children. If Courtenay is a different name than Courtney, why shouldn't she be annoyed every time someone mispronounced it? #angelinajolie
@rd2uk: Then I'll guess that never in your waspy life have you read The Nonesuch by Georgette Heyer. If you had, you would have realized that it included a character named Courtenay Underhill. Copyright 1962! #angelinajolie
@rd2uk: I'm pretty sure, Courtenay Semel, the daughter of a billionaire doesn't give a crap what anyone thinks about the spelling of her name. Judgey much? By the way, all names are made up, so spelling shouldn't matter, even if it's not to your "waspy taste." #angelinajolie
@rd2uk: I've seen a few names, but along with the names it's also a town in BC that I grew up close to so it's a pretty normal occurance for this canuck! #angelinajolie
@rd2uk: Courtenay is actually an extremely WASPy precursor to Courtney. It's not used much in "those circles" anymore, after "Courtney" became so popular and they didn't want to be associated with such a "low-brow" name . . . but at one point it was considered fairly posh. #angelinajolie
@NellMood: I guess it's one of those "you have to know" situations. Mispronouncing "Courtenay" and "Courtney" isn't all that hard to do, and all this woman had to do was say "Actually, it's Courtenay. We get that all the time" and move on. However, she'd usually unleash a tirade that was usually uneccesary. I'm not insulting her choice of names, but a sense of humor/understanding when mispronunciations happen wouldn't have hurt. I'm Kathleen and I've gotten "Katherine" and "Karen" so much I've learned to answer to those. #angelinajolie
@Ms Meghan: I have read some things - that are probably wild speculation - relating this to the fact that Dion is Roman Catholic.
Whatever happened it must be really hard t go through something like that in the public eye. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want my personal business to be public knowledge. I have no problem with her not telling the world what happened if it is difficult for her.
In the UK women don't tend to tell everyone else they are pregnant until after 12 weeks. I know my family and friends in the US all tell about pregnancies almost right away. I personally always thought "Why not tell everyone right away? You might need support etc anyway if you have a miscarriage." Thinking now about the fact that you might have to make a decision to terminate or not if there were problems and might not want to share that with others makes me re-think this though.
@applejuice: I've never been surprised at women waiting to share about pregnancies, because anything could happen. It's just a little odd though. #marleematlin
@jigglyball: I think she's trying to refer to his attempt to publicize the inherent homophobia in the hip-hop world, but, being Fergie, is inept. #marleematlin
OK Tori Amos, just quit. This new album (which I've heard, for the record) is pap. Pure, unadulterated pap. I don't care how much goddamn research you've done.
As far as I'm concerned, Tori Amos died in a fire after Scarlet's Walk. #marleematlin
@GeorgeFayne: Are you referring to Midwinter Graces or Abnormally Attracted To Sin? Because Midwinter Graces is a beautiful holiday album, not sure why you'd call it "pap." #marleematlin
@Kivrin: I did not like this holiday album at all. Knowing that she is not religious, it really sounds to me (including the arrangements) like a marketing ploy to make money off Christmas. Like what Bob Dylan did.
Having said that, "American Doll Posse" completely ROCKS. Give it a listen.

A lot of her music has been about deconstructing or reclaiming the feminine from religious misogyny. Christmas, at this point, can be fairly secular. And since it's based on a Pagan holiday, I think it's fair game. I
Whether or not I've loved every one of her albums is less important to me than the fact that she's grown and changed as an artist. This included. #marleematlin
@hildy: I'm absolutely referring to Midwinter Graces, though Abnormally Attracted to Sin is a turd too. (Posse Bonus is maybe the first song of hers that actually made me angry.) I called it pap because it's terrible. And I love Tori. But she needs two things: 1. an editor and 2. an editor. The only good thing I can say about Midwinter Graces is that it's not 185 tracks long. #marleematlin
@tiredfairy: Yes, I understand the pagan feminist context of a lot of her music - I've loved Tori since I was 14. I'm just tired of her Stevie Nicks-lite schtick. Ophelia and Original Sinsuality (typing that makes me want to punch a panda) actively embarrass me when they come up in a shuffle. And ok, so she didn't put Have a Holly Jolly Date Rape on the Christmas album, but you can't convince me that Pink and Glitter is a stirring indictment of holiday sexism. I stand by my comment. It's treacle, and it's terrible. And maybe the reason that I'm so annoyed by it is that I know she can do better. #marleematlin
@Master.And.Everyone: Seriously, feel me on this. When one has a 6 year old that one desperately tries to avoid total crap with, one needs to look at things with new eyes. Listen with new ears, rather.
As @tiredfairy put it above, would I rather my own little angel warbled along with Tori while deconstructing the winter festivals than twanging out fucking Jingle Bells with Hannah Montana? YOU BET.
It's a lovely album and worth every penny to have some beautiful music and a different conversation during December. #marleematlin
@SomeAuthorGirl: OK, it's fine if you're six. Any older, and you should know better. Also, I'd avoid letting your kid listen to any other TA albums, at least until whenever you want to explain what China white is, and why the singer's daddy is a starfucker. But that's the thing - if Tori wants to stop singing about her miscarriages and start making music for children, or idiots (I'm looking at you, Mary Jane) or whatever, I'd appreciate a heads-up so I can stop looking forward to her albums.
In other (less hostile) holiday reccomendations: I don't really like Mariah Carey, but her Christmas album is effing phenomenal. #marleematlin
@GeorgeFayne: I'll be taking the parenting advice under advisement.
FWIW, I was never allowed to listen to kiddie pap when I was little. I was raised on classic rock, folk, and punk, and miraculously turned into a fine, contributing member of society. #marleematlin
@SomeAuthorGirl: Yeah, you got me thinking about what I listened to growing up - lots of Beatles, Van Morrison, classical, and (shudder) Amy Grant. My parents were tolerant of my desire for kid-pap (my dad interviewed New Kids on the Block for something, and was kind enough to bring me swag, even though I know it killed him), but also really gave my brother and I a background in the fundamentals (and by "fundamentals" I mean 80's New Wave, classic rock, and folk music out the yang.), I seem to have turned out ok.
I think my previous messages came off as crankier than I intended, but I assure you, that ire is entirely directed at Tori Amos. #marleematlin
@GeorgeFayne: That's fine, I didn't say you have to like it. My point was that musicians generally change over time, and I'd rather that than not. Or you get the Rolling Stones, who basically do a caricature of themselves.
Tori's music has shifted over the years, the way her life has. That's always been how she operates. Sometimes you get social relevance, sometimes you get pop, sometimes you just get whatever the hell it is she wants to do. You either go with it or you don't.
Music like hers is always highly, highly, subjective. I'm not questioning your comment or your opinion. Merely pointing out that this was her motivation, you're entitled to dislike the execution.
I view Tori the way I view every creative person whose work I enjoy. It's nearly impossible for them to do something I will like every single time. Everyone has an off day, album, story, screenplay, whatever. If they do something I don't like in terms of style, then I move on. I don't get angry about it because I have far more good albums I enjoy from her than not.
If she ever does an album dedicated to the awesomeness of the patriarchy and tells every woman to start having babies and give up the vote, then I'll get cranky. :} #marleematlin
@GeorgeFayne: I feel ya. :) I was never censored artistically, and I think that children, as well as parents, are not given enough credit for sophistication.
As a fan, yeah, Tori has gone some places that I can't follow at times. As a parent, I can look at projects like this one and say "I get it, and thanks for bringing me with you." #marleematlin
@lurkerbynature: Oh, for sure. I don't consider that in the same way I consider Kidz Bop (gah) or Disney fodder (barf). TMBG, for example, are a band that have taken the fan with them into adulthood/parenthood. I dig that. My kid can listen to the children's album and also listen to Flood. :) #marleematlin
@SomeAuthorGirl: I'm not familiar with Kidz Bop or any Disney stuff after the '80s (some of which was actually pretty good), so I don't know if they even have some of the joyful silliness that can be so great about children's music. Sounds like you're a pretty cool parent though. #marleematlin
