    with reference to the skin lightening stuff in India, while I agree that a lot of that ties into the Indian caste system, but a huge part of is tied in strongly with the concept of 'brown englishmen' etc #brangelinajewelry

    @rd2uk: I don't know, I saw skin lightening lotions all over Asia. I think it's just used to be a marker of wealth/beauty, like how it used to be cool to be overweight and pale in the US if you were wealthy and you weren't working all the time.

    A side note, my friend was absolutely shocked when we first came across lightening cream, because she was so used to pale being undesirable. #brangelinajewelry

    @Heidi Lengdorfer: totally agree with both of you, just saying that in the case of india colonization plays a huuuuge role in people wanting to be lighter skinned/speaking english/wearig western clothes etc. obv theres loads of other factors that play into all of this, such as those that ya'll have mentioned. #brangelinajewelry

    Wait, is "Escada, the struggling fashion house" the same Escada that makes perfumes? I had no idea they were in trouble. I hope they stay afloat, Escada is the only perfume I wear, I have about 5 different bottles of it at home, it smells heavenly.

    I am so heading to eLuxury. Wasn't it the first "luxury" brand web retailer? I remember it being around before Net-A-Porter, I think. Kind of sad. But if it means I can get discounted stuff, also kind of awesome.

    Do you think that Madonna actually poses for pictures? Or does she simply license them to use her image, and then the CGI animators get to work.

    In reply to Beth Ditto Strips, Stage-Dives; Anna Wintour Maybe Makes Up With PETA
    I have to wonder: Why, when Beth Ditto strips off her clothes, is it considered beyond critique (and in fact, she's hailed as being awesome, fun, and kick-ass) while when other female singers/performers do it they're criticized or labeled dirty/a tart/etc.?

    I don't know how to delicately suggest this, but I get the uncomfortable feeling that some people think it's awesome that a non-skinny girl is proud of her body but, at the same time, feel that skinny girls (despite also being proud of their bodies) ought to keep their clothes on...

    Now, I'm not offended by Ditto's strip-happy routines, but I am also pretty certain that if Ditto were, say, Britney Spears, the commentary following such an act would spawn at least a few worsties. What I really want to know is: If taking off her clothes is subversive and cool for Ditto, then why not for other women? OR, if it's not, then why aren't more people stepping up saying that she ought to keep her pants on?

    @zakkagirl: I agree with you here a bit. I can see why people think it's cool and empowering that she can be so proud of her body, but also why it's a double standard that other women are made to feel bad about it.

    I think maybe it's something to do with the way she goes about it? When people Britney Spears do it, they are doing it simply to use their bodies in a sexual way to sell their product. When Beth does it I feel like it appears less sexual because she's kind of shouting, dancing, screaming in your face, rather than touching herself up while singing 'If U Seek Amy'.

    Maybe there isn't a big distinction, therefore maybe they should all keep their clothes on a bit more?

    @zakkagirl:

    I was about to post something very similar to this. The responses to this are - "Why is Beth Ditto so awesome! I want her to be my friend!"

    With Britney, I feel like they would say things like, "Oh, Britney."

    And Britney is maybe not the best example. Let's say it was Madonna. Or Fergie. Or lets think of the criticism that the Pussycat Dolls get. Why the double standard?

    @trakkie: It is not a double standard if one person is doing something to buck the standard and another is doing the same thing that everyone else does. In entertainment image is everything and the image of the Pussycat Dolls doing their barely-dressed pop thing is a completely different one than Beth Ditto stripping. One follows the norm and the other is alternative to the norm.
