I'm so sick of how chic it is to be anti-Botox, as if that's a badge of honor, like refusing an epidural during childbirth or claiming never to exercise or diet. Yes, it's unnatural but so are highlights and mascara. AND PHOTOSHOP. (of which Cate Blanchett has had plenty) You're not a superior human because you didn't take drugs when you had your baby and you're not a superior woman because you won't color your hair.
Is Julianne Moore any less talented because she admits to dieting and tending to her face?
That being said, I am grumpy and sick today.
But my forehead is gorgeous.
Now get off my lawn, you whippersnappers with your darn facial expressions!
@littlebunnyfoofoo: Ok, I'll bite. I'm 39 and anti-botox and plastic surgery because it seems like a laughable indulgence only wealthy vain people can afford. And yeah, I'm aging well. I mean, I try to look good: I use sunscreen every day and I have since 30, wear sunglasses during the day, don't tan, quit smoking and binge drinking, eat well and exercise, you know, all those petty annoying things that actually help better people age better naturally.
And I'm no fucking saint, trust on that, just middle-aged and mellower. But why the fuck does my face have to be unlined like it was when I was 30? I earned every goddamn furrow in my face through living, and I think I look better now than I ever have. No photoshop!
If George Clooney can be sexiest man of the year with laugh lines and gray hair, then screw it, I'm going for it, too. And no, injectable toxins is not the same as mascara or hair dye, honey. Nice try though.
@hoitytoity: Hair dyes are chemicals. Mascara is made up of LOTS of scary chemicals. We use unnatural substances every day to improve upon nature. Don't think that the lotions you put on you hands or deodorant you use isn't seeping into your pours right this very second. We slowly poison ourselves every day in the name of vanity. Humans have for centuries.
The intention of my comment was that right now it's fashionable to look down on those who use more modern tactics like Botox, as if they are unfairly cheating at the natural order of things, which I guess, they are. But most of us play tricks with nature all the time (eye drops, hair dye, lipstick, Spanx). It's all part of the ruse. Botox is just one more thing that women are using to slow the natural decline.
You're supposed to be pretty but God forbid you work at it.
Look at the vitriol it stirs here, even among complete strangers. Accusations of frivolity and bitter usage of the word "honey."
There's something deeper to this.
The truth is, it's fantastic that you are content enough to age gracefully. I have never had that kind of self-esteem. You're lucky. Some of us, however, need a crutch.
Many people my age don't really know who she is, and when I reference roles she's played, it's great because they don't realize it was the same person playing those different characters .. she is effortless.
VF has put three intelligent women in a row on their covers-Winslet, Fey and now Blanchett. And only one of them was partly naked. Figures this happens after I stop my subscription.
I love her but I have to say I find it annoying that these gorgeous stars talk about being anti-botox or plastic surgery and we are suppose to applaud them for it. I know she isn't really speaking out against it, just for her personally, but so often it is these beautiful woman who feel no need.
Yes if I had her incredible looks, bone structure, and ability to age gracefully I wouldn't feel the need for botox either. It is like when a woman with gorgeous skin talks about how we should go sans makeup or someone with a ridiculously fast metabolism telling us we shouldn't' worry about eating fatty foods. Many of us aren't that fortunate.
@Elaken: It's annoying especially because it's almost always a lie. I live in L.A. They all pretend they've had nothing done or that they "did it once but didn't like it." Bullshit.
Botox is awesome. It's hair dye for the forehead. It's all poison anyway.
Embrace modern marvels that help you feel better about yourself. It's okay to want to be pretty!
And yes I'll probably get slammed for saying this. Whatever.
It's part of life. We're born we die. Why does getting older suck? I mean I get not wanted to deal with age related illnesses but the superficial stuff? Life is too short.
I find the youth worship in America a little bananas (and living in L.A. for 10 years I saw the extreme). In L.A. a woman over 35 is old and unacceptable. So glad I don't have to deal with that crap anymore. It's one reason I moved to Italy.
I don't think we have to let ourselves go as we get older but these 30, 40, 50 etc. somethings in L.A. cutting themselves up to look 20 are not fooling anyone. They just look plastic.
It's offensive that people think something is wrong with you if you don't have work done. I went to see a movie with Diane Lane a few years back. A studio exec friend said she didn't understand why Diane didn't fix her eyes. Diane is stunning and looks great. My friend is so used to seeing women in their late 30s with NO wrinkles that Diane looked strange to her. sigh
My parents are from the Caribbean and a 40 year old is still young. Could be because the avg. age is like 80.
@nyc-caribbean-ragazza: You could say that pain is a part of life but we have plenty of things to help ease pain and often erase it entirely.
If we can use medicine to lengthen our lives, why not use it to lengthen our beauty as well?
I know people take it overboard and as a young woman, I swore I would NEVER do superficial things to alter my natural decline, but as a woman in Los Angeles in her thirties in the Industry, you bet your ass I do whatever I can.
I find her to be an excellent actor, though that Indiana Jones bit was awful... I'm here to ask for an LOLVanityFair post though, b/c these pictures are too good to be true. For instance...
As a pale girl - well to be fair, transparent - I think the fact that Cate is showing that you can be beautiful and pale and interesting is great. But that's for purely selfish, vanity-related reasons.
But beyond that, she's fantastic all around. What sealed it for me was when she played Kate Hep; she was utterly perfect. Sigh.
@the_decider: Can we talk for a second about the ending of that movie? They had my suspension of disbelief right up until Cate's holding his newborn corpse in her arms. Your bones cannot shrink and collapse like that at the end of your life. If he'd ended up a smooth-faced wizen-eyed little person then I could have bought into it. Meh. Wanting to see how they'd portray such a thing (and the delightful eye-candy)was the only reason I went to see that movie. Now I'm just itching to go back and edit it.
@the_decider: I thought the film was nearly flawless, save for the stupid, unnecessary and obvious plot device of the present day narration/Katrina stuff. It was so pointless, and I didn't care about the character reading the diary, and every time the action of the film stopped to remind us of the hospital/hurricane, I was annoyed. Why they didn't have Pitt narrate the first half of the film, and Blanchet narrating the second, I don't know. Still, yes, tears in the eyes. Lovely story.
I'm glad she doesn't buy into Hollywood but it seems like she takes herself so seriously. This is why the Oscars are never fun to watch. Everyone is so aware of themselves.
@tscheese: @Vivelafat is the Quizat Haderach: Whenever I have a true, epic meltdown (read: about once a week) I always call it a "freakout of Galadriel-esque proportions."

I find botox very distracting for actors. It's hard for them to emote.
I am not a fan of it. We get older, so what?
