This kind of reminds me of an incredibly self-absorbed friend of mine who, after the girlfriend of her roommate had a miscarriage, spent weeks crying and moping and talking about how hard it was for her to go through that. She even tried to use it as an excuse for why she was being unreliable to her other friends: "I've been through so much recently with S's miscarriage!" Finally, I had to sit her down and tell her sternly "This is not about you. S went through a hell of a lot more than you, considering she is the one who lost the baby. So get a grip and quit appropriating someone's else pain."

This guy kind of reminds me of that situation. I mean, how do you think his wife felt, giving birth alone, on the floor of the bathroom, probably scared shitless for herself and her baby, with no medical intervention? She could have bled out on that floor before the ambulance ever arrived. I know if must have been disappointing (and maybe even emasculating) for the father to have missed out entirely, but rage-inducing? What the heck does he have to be so rageful about? Except that his incredibly narcisstic self was relegated to "irrelevance"?

I think this touches on something that struck me when I was watching Knocked Up. You know when she's in labor, and the doctor won't give her an epidural or something, and the father takes the doctor into the hallway to yell at him and the doctor only takes him seriously because his stomach grumbles really loud? Which is apparently what happened in real life. And makes me think both of those men should have their penises revoked because a loud stomach grumble is cause for concern and a BIRTHING WOMAN is not? Because menz has powah. Or something.

@Lizawithazee: Dear god, that baby is 13 years old now. That guy suffered through "three of the most terrifying minutes" of his life. 13 years ago. From the birth of a baby who seemed to be completely healthy.

What a self absorbed little wanker.

I read that this morning and I still don't get what his problem is. She couldn't help having the baby, and sometimes it doesn't happen the way you planned. Moreover, it was over a decade ago, since he mentions that his daughter is about thirteen, so get over it. I don't have any idea what that had to do with his divorce, just none.

This is where I stopped reading. Note to new parents: if you have to actually tell people how a particular names is pronounced, then it's probably not a good choice.

On the rest of the planet, Tia = TEE-uh

If you want your kid's name to be pronounced TYE-uh, then spell it with a Y, maybe?

I would have interpreted this as "You must have been so scared about what might happen to your wife and child." My wife went through 40 hours of labor, there were times I could do absolutely nothing for her. It was terrifying. I was worried I was going to lose both of them (Everything turned out fine).

This guy took a wrong turn, though. If everyone makes it out OK, be thankful and feel blessed, don't be angry that you could not do more. There's only so much a guy can do anyway, really, you should call 911 and then get ready to catch the baby. Jeez. At least if he keeps telling that story and looking at it through that lens, maybe he won't be passing on his genes again.
