    This reminds me of when I was browsing in a used bookstore and came across a copy of "Modeling for Dummies." Curious and amused, I flipped through it and saw that the book's previous owner had gone through and highlighted passages like "Don't chew a large wad of gum on go-sees," or some similarly no-duh advice. I found myself feeling sorry for her and quietly reshelved the book.

    So....if you're 'plus size' and you want to model, you have to lose the tats and the nose rings, because apparently you only appeal to old ladies and republicans. I assumed that's what they meant by 'average women'.

    @mervbaby: I don't consider her to be anything but tiny, tall and gorgeous, but isn't Tyra herself considered 'plus size' in the modeling world? The whole concept of her having a book where she basically tells 'plus size' women they aren't special and needn't try to be striking seems awfully hypocritical.

    I call shenanigans. Twiggy's "networking advice" is a word-for-word ripoff of the cycle 8 episode where the genius contestants gave themselves "super self" names like Wholahay, Nayien and Whitelle.


    Tyra wrote this book while watching America's Next Top Model Obsessed marathons Sundays on Oxygen! I'm on to you, Banks!

    @Beets.Go.On: not really, most thinspo is just pictures of victoria secret models. so it's not usually what we typical think of as scary skinny or ill. but unrealistic, nonetheless.


    at least that's what i found by observing pro ana groups on livejournal as part of a study. and even within that subset it differs by group.

    @Beets.Go.On: I sense that a lot of the girls are, but some (Fatima, the twins) make the cut. I definitely try to veer away from tips like those... I think they're often an introduction to bigger things.

    @mervbaby: I guess it definitely depends on whether it's an actual "pro-ana" site or an ED support site, which are markedly different.

    @mervbaby: I did a study as well for an article I wrote, and I've had personal experience with the disease as well. There are a lot of sub-sets of thinspiration I think, and while ANTM might not be for the super-hardcore, the models on the show definitely have a place in thinspo.

    Why isn't Annie Leibovitz on that list of photographers? Is she not really considered a fashion photographer??


    And there's not a single woman on that list either. I mean, I don't think every career needs to be split absolutely 50/50 between men and women, but one of my pet peeves is seeing lists of all men.

    from a graphic designer's standpoint, the layout of this book and the graphical elements make me think of the first episode of Fashionista, when they had to layout their "ideas" and most were just hideous.


    and also, thanks for telling me to Breathe and Bathe to retain inner beauty. I never knew!


    Also?? That whole "how to walk in heels" paragraph made me dizzy.

    @Acrobatica Rabbitica: I think I could put this book together using the photoshop skills I've picked up through life. I don't usually feel this way, since graphic design is a challenge. This book, however, looks like disaster.

    2- Have the kind of parents who are willing to support you possibly starting a career during your teen years
