Is The Meaning Behind Beyonce's Music Misunderstood?

Now don't get me wrong, I have some issues with both as a feminist. But at least the "no Toilet no Bride" is getting something good for the world out of this economic exchange. That's more than I can say for diamond rings.

These women seem like they are trying to gain the upperhand in this situation the only way that they can. With increased health and education for Indian women, they may actually get some real power on their sides and be able to end the trend of female commodification.

Simple.
Also, those reviewers who say that her lyrics are un-feminist because of such and blah -- you can be a feminist and want to be loving towards your boyfriend. SHOCKING. o_o

I'm not that kind of girl
Your love is what I prefer, what I deserve
Here's a man that makes me then takes me
And delivers me to a destiny, to infinity and beyond
Pull me into your arms
Say I'm the one you own
If you don't, you'll be alone
And like a ghost, I'll be gone
I thought I udnerstood it, and then she was all, "say I'm the one you own, and I was all wtf.

Because of the "to infinity and beyond" bit, I think of "Toy Story" every time I hear that song.

Also, I'm really sick of this "If a man said it, you'd like it" kind of argument. It's the same one men's rights activists use all the time: that because an action from one gender is valued and the same action from another gender is devalued, that proves hypocrisy. No. A man "catering" to his wife with housework and physique does *not* have the same implications as a woman doing it, just as a white man donning blackface doesn't have the same implications as a black man donning "whiteface". It doesn't matter if the act is the same. The history is different, the power differential is different, and the way it operates in society is different.
Lyrical imagery of catering to your husband through domestic chores, in an ideal non-patriarchal society, would be totally innocent and sweet. But this isn't that world, and lots of the things we do - from wearing lipstick to cooking dinner - are going to hang heavy with implications, whether we want them to or not.
I'm not saying that singing blissfully about taking off your husband's shoes is wrong. I just don't think the "reverse the sex!" argument proves that it's okay.
This whole comment is probably coloured by the fact that I don't like her voice. I find myself making all kinds of ridiculous excuses for P!nk, whose voice I love.

I'd rather my future daughters emulate her than the tarts out there.
