Re: Filene's Basement. I visited Boston this summer after being away for 3 years (I went to college there), and was walking through Downtown Crossing and saw that they had gutted Filene's Basement and dept. store and I literally started crying right there on the street.
When I was little, I used to visit my Nana in Boston, and she'd take me to the basement to shop.
Sometimes I go into the Filene's "basement" here in Chicago and I scoff. It's not even below street level and eveerything is neatly on hangers. Hello?! I want to rifle through bins!
@thesciencegirl: Don't worry, they're renovating that one. It's going to take some more years to finish but the place has been shut for a while as they basically gut and re-build the insides. It's part of an effort to revitalize the Downtown Crossing area (fingers crossed that this will actually work).
@morninggloria: I usually swing by the one on Michigan (by the big Borders) because I can get there and back on my lunch break. I have found some awesome dresses there for pretty cheap, but it really isn't comparable to the real FB.
@notbodacious: oh, thank goodness. Every summer, without fail, we went into Boston from the Cape to walk another piece of the Freedom Trail. My mom and I always slipped over to Filene's Basement and then to S.S. Pierce. If the store was gone forever, I would mourn.
@Jello Mix: I think some of the things he loves are wack-a-doo, personally. But, I also think I get inspired by his pictures to wear things I might not otherwise, and I think that's the point.
@Perla: Ms. is the standard professional way to address any woman.
I welcome the lack of differentiation between married vs. unmarried. Eliminating the extra "r" also eliminates any subliminal thoughts of married women being more responsible, or on the flip side, married women being unreliable because they'll just leave work to have all kinds of babies soon.
So, Michelle gets up in the morning, looks at her clothing options, and picks one -- without calling the designer first? I'm going with that. Save me all those calls to Banana Republic and Nine West.
@AthertonMerriweather: I'd love to see Sheree try to dress Michelle. I'm picturing Sheree coming over to the White House with sketches (drawn by someone else). Sheree then tapes the sketches onto Michelle.
"These drawings are gorgeous," says Michelle. "When will the dress be finished?"
"This IS the finished product," Sheree replies. "Seriously, my part in this process is over, unless you want me to call the sketch artist and yell at her."
The Tracy Feith dress is the one in the picture there?
I really like it. It's kind of...mom-ish, but not in a terrible way. I have a strange fondness for modestly-cut patterned outfits--maybe 'cos Mamãe Zinha always wore them to work.
@alexburrito: she has a built-in excuse not to wear heels: she has to be on her feet all day, and besides, this keeps her closer to the American people.
I hope Michelle single-handedly wipes out the four-inch stiletto business.
@vamusical: If they close the FB near my parents house, I will cry. Probably cry more than when Filene's turned into Macy's, I always find good stuff there, and after the renovations it is so easy for me to find things!
@vamusical: Oh good lord, I am an idiot. I totally misread your post as "Don't go TO Filene's," so I thought you'd had some kind of traumatic experience in one of the stores, ha!

(I could be wrong--I don't follow the show, but do get some information here on Jezebel, so I'm not COMPLETELY out of the loop.)

There's also a Marshall's AND DSW Shoe Warehouse at Clark and Diversey, which is pretty much heaven.

Question: Why is she listed as Ms Obama, rather than Mrs? Is that her preferred title?
