I didn't pay much attention in Government class (which I now regret) but are we not including State Senators?

And while we're at it, what is the difference in responsibility, duties, etc. between a State Senator and a Senator?

@evil.overlordof.fakeamerica(mightaswelllive): For one, because there are hundreds upon hundreds of them. State Senators represent districts in state legislatures, whereas federal Senators represent the entire state in the United States Senate. Except for Perdue, this is a federal list.

You left out Wendy Davis, who beat the pants off of corrupt good ol' boy Kim Brimer for the district 10 senate race in Texas although the senate race was missing from some ballots!

I will totally admit that I actually really liked Elizabeth Dole.
.. that is, until she drank the Rovian Kool-Aid and started spouting crap she would have died before uttering 8 years ago.

@alysbrangwin voted for Kay Hagan: Yea, being an atheist/agnostic in NC is something we don't talk about, especially not if you're running for public office. I heart my state, but damn if we're not still Bible-belt country.

Kay Hagan is awesome, though. I'm not exactly excited about Bev Purdue; she's a rather conservative Democrat, especially about gay rights/gay marriage. We'll see...

Ugh. I'm from Maine and I'm still mourning that senate seat loss. I'm all for women in the senate and such, but Susan Collins is really incorrigible. I have to see her speak every few months and she drives me up the walls. Tom Allen is about as exciting as mayonnaise, but I still hoped he might steal the seat.

Ah Maine! The liberal state that votes republican. Sheesh.

@ZookeeperCarly: not when you live here. Also, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins are not as independent as they like to claim: they vote party line 85-90% of the time. I don't hate Olympia, but S. Collins is a horse of a different color.

I'll give you women's issues, but I'm still pissy! :)

@insomniacmeg: I spent the ages of 7-25 in Maine, but I'll admit, I'm in California now and haven't been following Maine politics that much in the last few years. I have always hated Collins voice (who doesn't?) but she always struck me as a hard-working senator. Though I agree Tom Allen would have been obviously the better choice. I met him once. He is even more boring in person, but I did appreciate that volunteering for Clinton/Gore '96 at age 15 got me on their Christmas card list for the rest of my life.

@ZookeeperCarly: I think she may be hardworking, but fundamentally I don't think she's that smart. Not that our politicians have to be MENSA memebers (Mike Michaud had to work extremely hard to even be able to give a linear speech), but every time I hear her speak (OH MY GOD that voice is awful!!!!!!!) she lacks the intelligence, thoughtfulness, etc. of a truly great politician.

She also said she's only do three terms, and here we are twelve years, still stuck with her...

@insomniacmeg: I had totally forgotten that she said she'd only do three terms. Has it really been 12 years already? Damn. I think once these people get to the Senate it becomes so easy just to hold on to the seat for all eternity and continue to try to make themselves more and more powerful.

So what is Tom Allen going to do now? Ride around on a bus like Angus King?
