This reminds me of when I rang JD Salinger's doorbell to request his copy of The Catcher in the Rye. He wasn't too pleased, for some reason.

WANT Peter Rabbit! My collected Beatrix Potter was my favorite book as a child - my parents and I read it over and over until the cover literally fell off. Sadly, that original book was lost somewhere in my parents' move, but it's okay because they gave me a new copy when I was in my early 20s. Nothing makes me as happy as settling down with a good Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail story.

Incidentally, has anyone ever read Lynne Truss's novel Tennyson's Gift? It's about Lewis Carroll and Alice, and it's delightfully absurd.

@Mary McCarthyite: Katie Roiphe wrote a novel called And Still She Haunts Me which is basically about the nude portraits. . .I think it's kind of problematic as a novel, but it's an interesting addition to the literature on the relationship between the two of them.

@Mary McCarthyite: It alludes to them, but the book is not meant to be historically accurate at all. It only borrows real literary figures, like Carroll and Tennyson, for a novel setting, but with no pretension at realism. One of the tongue-in-cheek themes is that Liddell is the one who gets obsessed with Lewis Carroll, and she wants to run away with him, and keeps following him around, causing him to go to great lengths to get away from her.

It sounds terrible out of context, but I promise it's not making light of pedophilia.

@FrannyR: Hey, what do you mean, "when cyberpunk was cool"? : D

But what about the gratuitous drug references in Alice? How do they fit that into the tween scene of the year?

Puh-leez. Lewis Carroll could wield more Christian symbolism with his left pinky, than Stephanie Meyer could in that whole, clangingly arduous series. And Alice could (and regularly did) rescue herself.

Meh. These kind of suck. I'm not totally against the idea, but the actual portraits of Alice are pretty close to the nekkid wimmins pics that prison inmates tend to draw. #barenakedladies

I like the drawing sans Alice because she just doesn't seem to fit in. I do like how she is drawn though. I would have expected her body to be exaggerated but for the most part it seems, to me, that her breasts are proportionally sized, her butt isn't particularly perky, she has thighs, etc. #barenakedladies

See, I knew that Alice's adventures in Wonderland were all a dream -- but I never knew it was the kind of dream where she was naked and everyone else was clothed. Those dreams are the worst. #barenakedladies
