    Sorry but Gwyneth isn't the sole propagator of the idea that shampoo (amongst most things) cause cancer.


    There are people who have been "no-pooing" and refraining from using makeup, and other off the shelf product because of this.

    Nordstrom Rack and Saks Off 5th are nothing special. Neither can compare with Filene's Basement, which is why it's so depressing that Filene's Basement is having trouble. You bought out the original Filene's department store, perhaps you can save the Basement?

    I thought TJMaxx and Marshalls got all the Macys brands...it seems that way anyway. It's not like Macys is that high end to begin with.

    @tomatoheart: Well, FWIW, I do work with department stores. They fall into three categories: high-end, mid-tier, and mass market. Macy's falls into high-end (along with Nordstroms, which also has their own discount store, for example) so this makes sense to me and is also awesome.

    @Understater: Though I agree that Americans love a rags-to-riches story, I don't think we're inherently averse to inherited wealth or even to a sort of homegrown aristocracy (witness the Kennedys). For my part I would be more specific about what's annoying about Gwyneth. It's the same thing (well, one of many) that annoys me about George W. Bush: Born on third base but thinks she hit a triple. Hence all her GOOPy advice handed down with apparently no clue that 99% of people would need to save up for a month, a year, or forever to afford the little things she picks up at boutiques for a lark.

    @Fate'sBitch: As I understand it, the money is in catalogs and advertisements. That's why it's a big deal when a model gets a contract with a makeup company or Victoria's Secret or something similar, it means they're getting a regular pay check.

    Thanks all, it's always made into such a big deal when a model gets an editorial shoot, I just assumed there would big money too. $100 seems like a shitty deal.
