Nevermind that she was flying alone, but what the hell was he doing touching her once she said no anyways?!?!? So much wrong with this case. So proud of her that she was able to stand up and start shouting. All little kids should be taught to just start shouting what's happening at the top of their lungs if someone is doing something innapropriate like that!

*sigh* sadly, this is nothing new. my boss used to be the PR "damage control" guy for a major airline, someone is molested in-flight about two times a week. Mostly adult women are the ones reporting.

UGH! Poor kid!

When I was a FA, I always tried to get someone from the front row to swap seats with my UM so I could keep a close eye on them. Also, I was the only FA on the plane (turbo-props and small jets). If I couldn't get someone to swap, I made sure to walk by very often and ask the UM if they were ok. I'd also give their seatmate some serious side-eye just so they knew I was watching closely. Again, these were small commuter planes, so it was easier for me to keep an eye out.

There's a school of thought that these men seek out marriage and religion as a cure for deviant sexual thoughts and behaviors. Those with a talent for self-delusion sometimes become ministers, preachers, priests, etc., thinking if they can only get closer to God, he will heal them. It taints my idea of the devout because the more vehement the person is about the sins of the flesh, the more I doubt his sincerity and think he's screwing someone on the side or fondling children.

@EgbertSydor: The school of thought, though, also admits that the number of men seeking out those positions for perverted reasons is small in comparison to the men who seek out those positions for genuine reasons. This is a terrible crime, and the pastor is only making himself worse by trying to deny it. Everything he's worked on should be investigated by police, especially because of the orphanage and the children without advocates who he may have abused or worse. But that doesn't mean that every pastor needs to be suspected of being a horrible pervert. It does bring up the need for better checks and balances in orphanges and other childcare facilities and better security for passengers on planes.

Even if she WAS in her 20s, that doesn't give a man permission to touch her when she doesn't want it, which she clearly didn't. The fact that she's a CHILD makes him even more terrible.

@dirtybee: I imagine it relates to the posting on stepping in when seeing a parent disciplining a child, i.e. a fear of embarrassment, social mores, what if they're wrong, etc. Plus, there could be disbelief at what is being seen, as in "this could not possibly be happening." But I would like to think that if somebody noticed it, it would be stopped.

@dirtybee: That's another problem with being a passenger on an airplane, though. You really can only clearly see what the people next to you are doing, and maybe across the isle in your row, but you are blind when it comes to the rest of the plane unless you get up and walk around.

This is a very sick story. I hope "Emily" and her family are ok. I'm sure she already suffers from image-related issues and puberty, so adding this event on top of that is a lot to handle for a 13-year-old girl.

Oh, and the last place I'd ever think of having a weight-loss camp is Philadelphia. But it also makes sense.

Still molestation, but guilty parties often play word games to try and word smith their way out of what they've done. "I can't have molested a child, she looked like she was 21! I mean she had boobs! And if I'm not guilty of the child part I'm CLEARLY not guilty of the molest part! Uh-duh!"

@PrairieGirl: Makes the hypocrisy even that much more stark? Somebody preaching about morality can't even adhere to one of its most basic tenets? The fact that anybody who would do this would think they have any right to judge the actions of others? The right-wing "family values" that apparently include molesting a teenager on an airplane?
