My problem with Pocketful of Rye is that Matthew McFadyen stole all the scenes he was in. I kept waiting for him to speak, vs Miss Marple, and I felt like with Joan Hickson that was never the case. And no, I don't have a thing for Matthew McFadyen.

I can't handle the new opening to Mystery - they have BUTCHERED the Edward Gorey animation. Alan Cumming is okay, but all of that plus no more Joan Hickson (RIP) was too much for me to handle. I can't watch these.

Cranford Christmas (2009)
It's August 1844 and Miss Matty knows only too well that faces will always come and go in Cranford, but for now she is happy that her dear brother, Peter is home from India and that Martha, Jem and baby Tilly make for a lively household. Lady Ludlow is awaiting the return of her son, Septimus, and young Harry Gregson is about to start his education at Shrewsbury, benefiting from the moral support of Miss Galindo. Then there's news that wealthy widower, Mr Buxton has returned to live in Cranford, bringing with him his charming ward, Erminia and his handsome Eton-educated son, William. Whilst at nearby Thorn Cottage, Peggy Bell tries to make the best of things caring for her mother and brother Edward. Elsewhere, the world continues to change, but for now the railway has stopped five miles outside Cranford in spite of the efforts Captain Brown. All too soon life in Cranford will change in some very unexpected ways.

Really, I just like Joan Hickson so much (totally unrelated to how much she looks like one of my grandmothers and sounds like the other), it will take a massive adjustment to enjoy another portrayal. Certainly I felt that Geraldine McEwen was too knowing somehow. Julia McKenzie is a brilliant actress though, so perhaps I will enjoy it.

@Ailatan: Have you read the books? V good but rather caustic, compared to the TV series (which I agree was excellent).

@Your Screenplay Sucks: "Evil under the Sun" is one of my favorites, as much for the great descriptions of the habits of the upper class English on vacation as for the murder (spoiler! there's a murder!)

And for Miss Marple "Murder At The Vicarage" is a classic, as is "The Body in the Library"

@ZafirahKhayln: Do try and start the Rebus books earlier in the series if you can to get the background on the characters. It really enhances the later books...

And as Devonna mentioned Val McDermid is another Scottish crime writer with a great catalogue, including an out and proud lesbian detective in the Lindsay Gordon series.

What's recommended as the best Miss Marple mystery? I've always been a huge Poirot fangirl, and lamely attempted to read a few of the Miss Marple stories when I was young, but they didn't take with me. But after re-reading every Poirot book about a zillion times, I think I need to try to dive back into Miss Marple just to get a Christie fix.

What's a mystery that will really get me hooked? Once I'm in, I'll start over at the beginning and work my way through the books chronologically. (For instance, Murder on the Orient Express is what triggered my initial Poirot/Christie obsession.)

@odinsraven: The Body in the Library (one of the first ones) is one of the best. In fact, I think it's one of Christie's best out of all her books. And it's pretty short compared to some of her other books, too, so it moves pretty quick.

But I wanted to marry Lord Peter Wimsey, Dorothy Sayers' amateur sleuth. Apparently, so did Dorothy Sayers, thus his eventual marriage to mystery writer Harriet Vane.
