Explain to me why scientists are wasting their time on shit like this when we still have no cure for HIV/AIDS or about a million other serious terminal illnesses. She was beautiful. We get it. Neeeeext. #nefertitiinnerstatue
@winowino: Call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure the same scientists looking at her bust aren't the ones curing the diseases. Just my two cents, don't spend it all in one place. #nefertitiinnerstatue
@winowino: Clue: There is no monolithic 'science' which is equally applicable to all problems. There are lots of different branches and specialisms within science. The people who know how to find hidden statues within statues don't know anything about curing diseases, and quite possibly haven't any aptitude for it. Let them do what they're good at and discover interesting stuff, and donate to research into the diseases that concern you. #nefertitiinnerstatue
Yo Nefertiti, I'm really happy for you, and I'mma let you finish but Akhenaton had one of the best busts of all time. One of the best busts of all time! #nefertitiinnerstatue
This may sound weird, but I always wondered if that bust was really accurate. I always thought that Egyptians were African and that bust does not resemble an African woman. Kind of like how the sphynx had its nosed shaved down. I always wondered if the bust was tampered with to look more "white". #nefertitiinnerstatue
@Armed with Vitriol: Welllll IANA anthropologist, but it seems to me there's an awful lot of variation among regional facial traits. Egyptians are Africans, but they have different characteristics from, say, people in Sub-Saharan Africa, or South Africa, or West Africa. Egyptians also had a lot of contact with people on the Arabic peninsula, the Assyrians, and I think the Greeks too, at that point. #nefertitiinnerstatue
@Armed with Vitriol: I was just commenting to myself that this statue looks like it could be a current-day depiction of a beautiful woman. I thought standards of beauty had changes over the centuries and were different geographically. She has lush red lips, small straight nose, nicely arched eyebrows... she could be around and fit in today. #nefertitiinnerstatue
@Armed with Vitriol: I've read that the bust was stylized to be symbolic of a delicate flower on a stalk (note the elongated neck). Also, have you seen the portraiture from the reign of her husband? Shit's crazy...completely different from any other Egyptian art; very experimental. #nefertitiinnerstatue
@Armed with Vitriol: Africa is an enormous continent with a wide variety of people of all shapes and sizes! I had an Egyptian girl as a classmate growing up, and she was very beautiful, resembling this statue in certain ways: violet-colored eyes, classically proportioned features, what could be described as "mocha" coloring to her skin, with light brown hair, in perfect ringlets.
@Armed with Vitriol: There is no one "African woman" look. There are African women with narrow noses and straight hair who are every bit as African as I am with kinky hair and a broader nose. #nefertitiinnerstatue
@xay: I am aware there is no one "look" for African women and that skin tone, facial features, body type, etc. vary among women. This bust, however, looks like the face of a model in a Vogue magazine. I have long wondered if perhaps it has been tampered with to fit a more homogenized definition of beauty.
@linnyt is a walking cliché: I know! I thought the same thing. She looks like a model in Vogue. It was totally just a random, weird thought I had and then I remembered hearing how the sphinx was essentially given a nose job, and I had to wonder if something similar happened here... #nefertitiinnerstatue
