Every clinic that I contacted about getting the abortion pill (about 6 years ago so things may have changed) told me that I would have to take the pill at the clinic and the cost would be almost the same as a surgical abortion.
@xay: Some of this has to do with "physician-only" laws. States have laws saying that only a physician can perform an abortion. These were put in place back when it was legalized to prevent women from being tricked by quacks with no training. Now it is used by those states to say that Physician's Assistants, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Nurse Practitioners can't do abortions because they aren't physicians. These types of providers have the skills and training to do abortions (medical or surgical), but the laws of their states won't let them, so access is prevented. I think that is a big factor in abortion access.
@NellMood: I hope she gets a HUGE party when she gets home and all her family and friends are AWESOME to her.
Not that that would cancel out how upsetting this whole thing has been, but SHE DESERVES IT.
That milkshake ad is FUCKED UP. How could they even run it? Do you have an advertising standards agency that you could complain about it to in the US? And why did her parents consent to it?
AAAAAAARGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
@cuteasabutton: It's sick. I really hope they just Photoshopped the image of the girl onto the milkshake. Even so, though, her pose is incredibly inappropriate. WTF??? AAARGHH!!!
@NellMood: especially cats that have been BEATEN TO DEATH. i'm trying to keep the images out of my head (and hugging my puppy) but i can't imagine the cats looked like they had died of natural causes.
@dirtybee: No no, she was the one replacing the cats, she just didn't know how they were dying. And this happened over the course of 3 months. 5 cats in the 3 months.
I don't understand how "procuring an abortion" is different from "getting an abortion". Does this mean DIY abortions are illegal? And a doctor prescribing RU-486 could be considered DIY?
I just had to have this a few weeks ago and I am so glad it is legal and safe and that I was able to do it at home with my boyfriend supporting and taking care of me.
The Australian government is treading on dangerous ground here. Here's hoping they find their braincells and throw this case out.
@DeedleDee: It's not a federal case it's...it's Queensland. Which, ahem, says a lot. Kind of like how some southern US states are stereotyped - more conservative and heavy on the jailtime.
@morninggloria: Yeah, my surgical abortion card is almost full! Two more and I get one free, or two nights' stay in a condo in Reno as long as I listen to a brief presentation!
@Flackette Goes Retro: Smuggling prescription drugs (particularly what I assume would be a 'cytotoxic' drug that is linked to serious potential complications) w/out a prescription = legally dodgy. The prosecution is bollocks, but.
@Fridge Hussy : Is finally heading back to uni!: Do you think the prosecution is about wanting to insure control over controlled drugs, or is it really more about controlling women's options? I'm curious since I don't know much about the political climate there.
@Laulau: Little from column A. Little from column B. Like I said in another comment, it isn't really available at all (in fact I was surprised the article inferred that the doctor handed it out regularly). People illegally importing R-U486 before it is more readily available is problematic. Not to mention, this occurred with (more like against!) the neocon Health Minister of the previous Federal government: [en.wikinews.org]
Hang on, R-U486 isn't produced/readily available in Australia. One has to go through a fuckton of caveats/loopholes to obtain methotrrexate for the same purpose.
Unless things are different since Howard buggered off? Or the doctors do things differently in QLD...but perhaps not given VIC's less stringent laws. Hmm.
