The Miracle Worker's producer, David Richenthal, countered that he needed to cast a proven star in order to secure the ship $3 million financing, and that it would be "financially irresponsible" to choose someone unknown. According to Patrick Healy of the Times, he also said, "It's simply naïve to think that in this day and age you'll be able to sell tickets to a play revival solely on the potential of the production to be a great show." Sharon Jensen, exectuive director of the Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts, disagrees. Her group represents deaf and blind actors, and she says,

We do not think it's O.K. for reputable producers to cast this lead role without seriously considering an actress from our community. I understand how difficult it is to capitalize a new production on Broadway, but that to me is not the issue. There are other, larger human and artistic issues at stake here.

The group also protested the casting of a hearing actor in a deaf role in the upcoming production of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, and their concerns raise the question of whether Hollywood and Broadway should be trying harder to include actors with disabilities. It's an issue that comes up often in films with intellectually disabled characters — historically, nondisabled actors have played these roles. I found it somewhat distasteful to watch Sean Penn impersonating an intellectually disabled person in I Am Sam, and I would have preferred to see someone who actually lived with those disabilities in the film. People with intellectual disabilities do act — famously in the movie The Ringer, but also on television — and although producers do bear an extra responsibility for not exploiting them, there's no reason for them not to be in mainstream films.

Except money, of course. Just as no deaf actress is as famous as Abigail Breslin, no intellectually disabled actor is as famous as Sean Penn, and Hollywood stars tend to be — or least, to look — able-bodied. And since producers — both in Hollywood and on Broadway — feel they need to cast stars in order to make big bucks, disabled actors don't have a very good shot. Of course, as Sharon Jensen points out, if people with disabilities never get the roles that could make them stars, this will never change. It used to be common practice to cast white actors in roles of people of color — once that became unacceptable, more actors of color rose to prominence (although you could argue that Hollywood is still pretty racist). Maybe it needs to become unacceptable for able-bodied actors to "play" disabled in order for disabled actors to succeed.

The question of authenticity is a tough one here. As I said, Sean Penn's performance as Sam made me uncomfortable, probably because seeing someone pretend to be disabled reminds me of playground mockery of actual disabled kids. And there's an argument that an actor with intellectual disabilities would have been more convincing. But ultimately, it would be nice if disabled actors were respected not for their ability to effectively portray their own disabilities, but simply for their acting chops. That would mean casting, say, deaf actresses not just in "deaf" roles like Helen Keller, but in other roles that don't specifically involve disabilities. If Hollywood and Broadway could do this, audiences might become more comfortable seeing people with disabilities in all areas of life — but as Richenthal's words show, we're still pretty far away from that. He has said he will consider casting a deaf or blind actress as Breslin's understudy — a step in the right direction, but a pretty small one.

<![CDATA[OMG! Teen Choice Awards Were Out Of Control!]]> The 2009 Teen Choice Awards, held at Universal City's Gibson Amphitheatre, was the place to be last night. Let's just put it this way: everyone was there. And most of them looked deliciously awful.

Britney Spears wants you to know she's in shape. And, apparently, that she has the same stylist. Noted!

Jesus Christ, I hope Kristen Stewart doesn't try to sit in this skirt; it'll draw blood - and we all know what happens then...!

That's quite a dress Vanessa Hudgens is almost wearing! Well, the belt's confusing.

Zac Efron takes teen Ken to the next level! I'm blinded!

Alexis Bledel is, it's true, one of my favorite people in the world (for inexplicable reasons) but come on, this is objectively awesome, right? (Right?)

I think Emma Roberts is an unheralded burgeoning fashionista with a rare ability, at a young age, to pull off things she has no business pulling off! And always still looking demure.

Chace Crawford: getting in character for a Witness remake?

Ok, so maybe the onesie trend is in its last gasp, but Kristen Bell looks darling, huh?

Well, hello, cutie! Lucas Till is so the high school heartthrob!

This makes me wonder if Abigail Breslin is going through the obligatory Middle School Summer of Love phase.

This is not the first time I've questioned the workings of Fergie's mind. Just because you can pull something off...should you?

Don't the Jonas Brothers look like a doo-wop group? Maybe this is appropriate.

Miss J is ready for a fierce tennis tourney; which doesn't explain why the hell he's wearing it here.

Miley Cyrus is apparently not feeling the pressure to look demure; guess that storm's blown over!

Leighton Meester continues to take fashion risks - and they're paying off!

Lil Mama, in her way, never disappoints.

Jordin Sparks: blue lagoon. No, I don't know what that means.

I understand where you're coming from and why you think this is important and that this is a play about being true to yourself. <![CDATA[My Sister's Keeper Red Carpet Less Depressing, More Glam Than Drama Itself]]> I get "tear-jerker," but My Sister's Keeper, a story of childhood cancer, forced donations, legal battles, etc. takes it to another level. But! Cameron, Abigail, and Rachels Roy and Zoe, all seemed so... happy at NYC's AMC Lincoln Square.

Cameron Diaz plays a woman whose daughter has acute promyelocytic leukemia. Here, she plays Cameron Diaz, a movie star whose name is attached to the words "California girl" 95% of the time.

Sofia Vassilieva plays Cameron's daughter. At first I worried her dress was a little mature (yes, "worried." I don't know how I sleep) but in fact, she's nearly 17.

Abigail Breslin, on the other hand, is 13. My mom didn't let me wear anything strapless to Bar Mitvahs, so I've sort of inherited that prejudice. But she seems like a seriously nice kid, so it's all good. I direct her attention to the ultimate child-star-turned-perfect-age-apropos-dresser, Dakota Fanning.

Now. Authors at premieres are always one of the highlights, and props on Jodi Picault's dress choice. But: curly girls everywhere: don't fear the volume! Seriously, it's more flattering! Especially with an open neckline! I speak from bitter experience.

Since Carol Kane objects to being reduced to a cultural stereotype, probably objects to thirty-year-old film references, I'll avoid any mention of Alison Porchnik, Princess Bride, bag lady costumes. I mean, she's someone who's earned the right to wear and do whatever she wants and still look like herself, so: awesome.

Wow, it's been a while since we saw the peerless Rachel Roy in a dress! As usual, she looks effortless - even in bridesmaid peach!

When did Rachel Zoe go from villainess to "Oh, Rachel, you harmless, vaguely endearing icon with your jumpsuits!" Wow, that show is genius PR!

I'm none the wiser about we'll ever be revisiting Gotham or not." — Christian Bale. Of another Terminator movie he says: "No conversation has been had about that at all." [Pop Wrap]
  • "That song is about when someone said to me, 'Okay, I want to be with you until I die.' And then they gave up. I was at the point in my life where I was like, 'Okay, let's die, but I tell you what, I'm going to kill you first, because I don't trust you.' Honestly. It's hard to look back and see myself as the same person. I'm very objective now. I started to apply this really fantastic rule that they don't teach you in AA or AAA, or any other acronym: Do drugs and drink when you're happy, not when you're sad. It has a great effect. But I can't say that I did that the whole time." — Marilyn Manson, still talking about Evan Rachel Wood. [Spin]
  • "She's a lot shorter than I thought she would be, but I was pleased by that. I'm happy there was a flaw. Having said that, I think Angelina is pretty talented. And a remarkable human being, and a great mom. She's definitely not like any other lady I know." — Six foot three Liev Schreiber, on his five foot eight Salt costar Angelina Jolie. [Gatecrasher]
  • "I did teach Abby how to say the f-word. I taught her how to drop the f-bomb in every way possible. I said, 'You're a child in an adult's world. I can't be a child for you. When she didn't swear, I said, 'You're starting to offend me Abby. If you don't start swearing every three words then I will fine you.'" — Cameron Diaz, 36 on working with Abigail Breslin, 13 in My Sister's Keeper. [Mirror]
  • "I am so often puzzled [by journalists]. Sometimes they go, 'So what's this all about? ... What do you look like when you go home? Do you dress like this all the time?' It's rude! It's not nice… [Lady Gaga] is who I am. Me and my hair bow, we go to bed together. She sleeps where I sleep." — Lady GaGa. [Yahoo News via AP]

<![CDATA[Loose Lips]]> Amy Winehouse is allegedly addicted to a new substance that makes your teeth fall out. No, it's not meth! It's candy. "The troubled singer has bought a pink candy floss maker, a £1,000 Slush Puppy machine and an old-fashioned sweet counter with jars of boiled sweets to decorate her Camden home," the Daily Mail reports. • Thank Jebus that Abigail Breslin still sounds like a normal, sweet girl. She says her acting idol is Meryl Streep, her favorite movie is the Devil Wears Prada, working with Cameron Diaz was "really nice" and her biggest influences are "My brothers, my parents, my whole family." • An ex-Scientologist in Florida is suing Tom Cruise and the Church of Scientology for $265 million. According to Fishbowl LA Peter Letterese "claimed that Cruise and Scientology bribed and improperly influenced a federal judge, a Florida state judge and a federal bankruptcy trustee to tie up his original law suit [also against the religion] in bankruptcy court."

<![CDATA[ Always-adorable Abigail Breslin has given...]]> Always-adorable Abigail Breslin has given a video interview to Premiere to promote her new movie, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl. Apparently the preteen actress had her pick of the movie's wardrobe department but what did she choose to take home? The overalls. Young Hollywood: Keeping it real. [Premiere]

<![CDATA[Kit Kittredge: American Girl Or Capitalist Pawn? Is There A Difference?]]> It's hard out there for a living, breathing American girl. It's a morass of mixed messages, A.O. Scott points out in a Times think piece about Kit Kittredge, the Abigail Breslin-helmed American Girl doll-based movie coming out this week. "Who are you supposed to be, or to avoid becoming? A nerd? A ditz? A flirt? A tomboy?" Scott wonders. "What kind of role models are those make-believe princesses, those Bratz and Barbies, to say nothing of the real-life Britneys, Lindsays and Mileys? Mean Girls, Gossip Girls, Girls Gone Wild, Girl Power, You go, girl! What's a girl to do?" And considering the pervasive skankiness of Bratz and their ilk, the American Girls franchise seems like a bastion of true childhood in an increasingly sexualized marketplace. But, as Scott painstakingly notes, it's still part of the marketplace. Jeannette Catsoulis, reviewing Kit for the IHT perfectly summarizes the intrinsic hypocrisy in this Depression-era film. "When you consider that a Kit doll, complete with book and accessories, will currently run you $105, the movie's insistence on the nobility of the indigent might be a tad more difficult to stomach."

And speaking of stomachs, Breslin has the notable lack of one in Kit. I received an alarmed missive from my mother (email subject: "A Beef") about this very issue last week. "Having just looked at Little Miss Sunshine, I was appalled today to see a picture of Abigail Breslin. I was happy to see she has a new movie (Kit Kittredge - from the American Girls franchise). BUT they have made her lose weight and dye her hair. She looks now like one of those girls she was mocking in Sunshine. It is scary. She is scary. " What my momma didn't know is that Abigail was wearing a fat suit to play delightfully rotund Olive in Sunshine. Her salient point still remains: even though Kit Kittredge has a better message than the Bratz movie, it's still selling a certain commodified ideal.

But, at the end of the day, having your kid look up to a self-reliant character who teaches a bit of history is far from the worst thing in the world. Of his daughter's American Girl doll, A.O. Scott writes, "She doesn't say much, and even though her expression is always fixed in a pleasant smile, she seems to change according to the moods and interests of her playmates. She is an athlete, a musician, a clothes horse, a bookworm, a pet owner, a loner and a confidant. A typical American girl, as far as I can tell."

<![CDATA[Some Fashions At The Kids' Choice Awards Were Surprisingly Childish]]> Saturday night brought one of the events that, in my youth, I anticipated as anxiously as the winter holidays: The Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. Lots of celebs! Lots of slime! Jack Black hosted the frenetically-paced activities and lots of celebrities brought the pretty. See: America Ferrera, left. Does she ever look bad? I also like how she played the pretty dress all casual with the wooden wedges, but that's neither here nor there. Also in attendance: Abigail Breslin, Cameron Diaz, Jordin Sparks, Jodie Foster, Amy Poehler, Ashlee Simpson, Hayden Panettiere, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, who is looking less like a tween of late and more and more like a 50-something who's spent too much time in the tanning booth. Miley, and the other Good, Bad and Ugly, after the jump.

The Good: abigailbreslinkidschoice033.jpgYay for Abigail Breslin: She looks age appropriate and looks like she dressed herself. In other words, nothing really matches, but I'm totally down with it. camerondiazkidschoice0330.jpgCameron Diaz might be sporting a silly Samantha Jones haircut, but her dress is, like, cute. jordinsparkskidschoice0330.jpgAw, Jordin Sparks turned Chloe orange into Nickelodeon orange!

The Bad: amypoehler0330.jpgOh Amy Poehler, the contrived irony is killing me. ashleysimpsonkidschoice0330.jpgAshlee Simpson wins herself a "bad" award for appearing totally unrecognizable. (And wearing Chanel accessories.) haydenkidschoice0330.jpgI'm convinced that Hayden Panettiere owns 12 of the exact same dress in different colors. Sadly, none of them are tailored quite right. jodiefosterkidschoice0330.jpgGo ahead and hate on me: I just prefer Jodie Foster looking a little more polished. And not in a bootcut jean.

The Ugly: mileykidschoice0330.jpgMiley Cyrus? Or one of the Real Housewives? rihannakidschoice0330.jpgRihanna had her fucking legs insured: Why must she hide them in such unflattering pants?!

<![CDATA[The ShoWest Awards Had Some Tickety-Tacky Hot Tranny Messes]]> ShoWest is the trade show for the movie theatre industry. And because movie stars can't be movie stars unless they star in movies that get played in movie theatres, well, they need to show the ShoWest distributors a little love. In attendance at the trade show's awards ceremony last night? A series of big and small screen celebrities, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Abigail Breslin, Jodie Foster, Anne Hathaway, Kate Bosworth, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Christina Ricci, America Ferrera and Alexis Bledel (left). After the jump, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the ShoWest Awards.

The Good:
abigailbreslin.jpgI think that both Abigail Breslin and her top are adorable.
jodiefoster.jpgJodie Foster: Still beautiful.
katebowsworth.jpgLooking too skinny again, but I do love Kate Bosworth's sorta mumsy dress.
sjp.jpgPretty good for SJP. (At least she's not wearing the Uggs and puffy coat.)

The Bad:
anitabriem.jpgValley of the Dolls much, Anita Briem?
brendanfraser.jpgOMG! It's Encino Man Brandon Fraser! I loved that movie buuuuudy! Too bad he looks like he hasn't changed his wardrobe since it premiered.
christinaricci.jpgChristina Ricci did not get the memo about why one does not wear a short shiny white dress.
emilehirsch.jpgDid Emile Hirsch get dressed in his dad's clothes?
maggiegyllenhaal.jpgWhy is Maggie Gyllenhaal wearing her support garments over her dress?
sethrogen.jpgSeth Rogen? Or your high school chemistry teacher?

The Ugly:
annehathaway.jpgIs Anne Hathaway starring in a film version of Little House on the Prairie? Or a public service announcement for "When Bad Shoes Happen To Good People"?
