I am probably the only one, but AARP's super-low age (relative to how long Americans actually live, on average, not to mention when they actually get to retire) for joining cracks me up. In my extended family, whenever someone treats me like a child because of my generation in the family but despite the fact I'm 28, I point out that I'm more than halfway to my AARP membership.
@vamusical: Yay Arlington! (I'm from East Falls Church, which contrary to its name is part of Arlington!) I'm hearting all my fellow Arlingtonians here.
At 64, hopefully I'll be too busy spelling r-e-t-i-r-e-m-e-n-t, b-i-t-c-h-e-s, w-o-r-k i-s f-o-r s-u-c-k-e-r-s, ,p-r-i-v-a-t-e i-s-l-a-n-d and m-a-n s-e-r-v-a-n-t to worry about a spelling bee.
You forgot the one of Kristen Stewart smoking a bowl on her doorstep. Her "I could give a fuck that 100 paps are taking my picture" attitude is the best thing about it.
Poor Michael Phelps. Leave the kid alone. Elizabeth Hasselback really is a certified idiot. Anyone who calls weed a gateway drug has zero knowledge about weed or gateways- for that matter.
@cheeksmcgee: I went to Method Man show in Boston and he kept lighting up blunts and passing them out to the crowd. The cops did NOTHING, it was hilarious and awesome!
Notice that people on this list are either losers, douchebags, has-beens? It's one thing to light up once in a while, it's another to define your whole public image once in a while. And don't think that just because the smoke in your lungs isn't from the evil cigarette company doesn't make it *healthy*. You still can get lung cancer.
@BytheSea: Are you joking? Charlize Theron is a has been? Barbra Streisand? Do I have to type like half the rest of the list who are still very famous, working actors and musicians? Also, no one that smokes pot thinks its healthy. Relax, save your bile for the heroin addicts.
@BytheSea: You wish you were as much of a loser has-been douchebag as old pothead Willie, age 75, still making music, touring, giving jobs to dozens of people. But it's cool. Willie doesn't mind.
I hate to say it now, but I got all upset when I heard my boyfriend smoked some pot with his friends a couple weeks ago and told him not to do it anymore, or if he's going to do it, only once in a while. I've never tried it myself, and I'm such a square that I worried about him becoming addicted. After reading some of these comments, I realise I have been a big Hassleback about it.
@Arkaina: Pot is fun, except when it's not. Nothing worse than a stoner boyfriend if you're not into it - don't go anywhere, can't travel and be away from the stash, have to watch a lot of shitty movies like those Lizard Nation ones, become pale and flaccid and wear a hole in the couch. Not that smoking once will do this; it's just that if he takes a fancy to it everything else on my list will DEFINITELY happen. And if you are into it you will tend to have a lot of great laughs together and say witty things, but avoid your relationship problems by getting high. And then break up. See, it IS a one-way ticket to hell!!
@jollydolly: I think he'd be ok, when I tell him no, he listens and doesn't ask questions. Plus he's a little concerned by how much his friends do it. They kind of turned me off of it by showing me the pictures on their phones, which were all taken at different times they were high. All of them.
@Arkaina: Yeah, pot doesn't normally lead to a life of crime or homelessness, but it can lead to a boring obsession with pot and talking about being high.
Sarah Silvberman gets extra bud points for smoking weed at Howard Stern's wedding. My fave story was from GZA, who tole me when I interviewed him for Sonicnet in the 90s that the Wu, coming back from Amsterdam were told they couldn't bring their "purchases" on the plane. Genius said he and the Wu smoked as much as they possibly could, cooked it in their eggs in the morning, then sadly flushed the rest down the toilet before heading back. The kicker: The Wu Tang Clan ended up getting on a private jet where, he said with true Wu rue, none of them were searched.
@lowkeylo: This has happened to me, but I can't say it's anything other than a lack of arousal WHILE high. I must say I can't orgasm on any of the drugs I've taken, so it could easily be that.
People need to stop getting in such a tizzy about things. He already shattered his "role model" (I can't say this without giggling since he's such an arrogant asshole) image when he got arrested for a DUI, which (to me) is far worse. Driving drunk can kill people. A little recreational pot smoke does not.
I'm 22. I've smoked in varying degrees of regularity since i was 14. I was high pretty much from the age of 14-17, then started drinking, got to Uni started smoking again. Some of my best experiences have been when I've been stoned. Ever wandered around a music festival high? You meet the best people. I met Phil Jupitus.
You can get cancer from smoking weed, it is a myth that it is "safe." But ultimately, it's the drinking and driving from a few years ago that really bugs me. I don't care if he smokes, but drinking and driving totally is terrible. And please don't spread the idea that smoking pot is harmless. It's not.
@Ceiling Cat: i don't think anyone here has made that claim. no, inhaling smoke is not good for your health. period. the argument that it's 'safer' (from what i've heard) usually relates to smoking as an alternative to binge drinking which is definitely a more immediate threat to one's health. i never really considered this until several college kids drank themselves comatose (three died) within a six month period in my town.
@Ceiling Cat: If we're talking about true side-effects, I have a friend who has a severe mental disorder because of his chronic weed reliance. No, it's not addictive, but people can become reliant, and he ruined a full decade of his life.
@Miss Carrie Nation: wow. That's the first I've heard of marijuana CAUSING a mental illness. Is your friend certain that it wasn't latent and the effect of marijuana made it worse? Or that the two issues just happened around the same time?
I think if you're prone to clinical-depression, smoking pot for prolonged periods of time can hinder things like motivation, decision-making skills, social interaction etc. Like anything else, it's best in moderation.
I ask because my father self-medicates with pot for a brain-chemistry disorder and has been given the green-light by his doctor. He even got a vaporizer to cut out the actual smoke, and just inhale the rendered thc (or however it is that works).
@cantstopwontstop: He was slightly pre-disposed to depression, but it accelerated an intense paranoia to a degree which I've never seen in anyone in my life. He thought that he was being bugged and tracked by MI5.
He did smoke around 10 joints a day at the time, though. And then didn't sleep for 5 days at a time. And my god it was the funkiest weed I've ever known. One drag and I threw up it was so damn strong.
I'm pretty sure it was caused by the fact that weed over here is rather impure, generally, and that was the actual damage factor. It seems to be of greater quality in the US, and is more conducive to usage for self medication.
Thankfully, he stopped smoking and went to the shrink and is cool now, if generally a bit of a nervous casualty at times.
@Ceiling Cat: not harmless but (1) compared to smoking you only take a few hits of weed, vs. numerous drags off numerous cigarettes. (2) compared to drinking, you don't damage your liver, and the "memory" effects people make so much of are proven to eb temporary, whereas drinking kills brain cells (i.e. permanent damage).
@Miss Carrie Nation: yikes! i've heard of that happening to people with bipolar disorder too... hypervigilance and paranoid delusions while stoned, that is.
@foco fo-SHO!: Me too! Worry not, Americans, I've just remembered reading an article that skunk seems to be more prevalent in the UK.
It's the most known form to cause paranoid delusions, and most skunk here is less than homegrown. Something scientific tht I can't remember about buds on certain pot plant strains. Anyway, what I'm saying is, Know your grower!
@Miss Carrie Nation: This happened to my ex boyfriend. "Drug induced psychosis." Of course there probably was a predisposition to a mental disorder, but marijuana can tip you over that edge.

My cousin Matt has a bottle of Gordon's Gin and is stabbing it with his Leatherman.
"Hey Matt. Whatcha making?"
"...Nothing."
"You are making a bong aren't you?"
"...No."
"Ok, don't cut yourself."
Later on in the afternoon we had to run to Wal Mart for something and my aunt wondered why it took Matt 15 minutes to find his jacket.
