I think too often we condemn clothing that harks back to our younger days not because the clothing is essentially fug, but because we are not mature enough to forgive ourselves for having been young. So the clothes are mixed up with our teenage angst. Fortunately some of the commenters here understand the difference between fashion for fashion's sake and their awkward feelings as tender teens.
I still love the long skirt, boots look and I still wear it. With minor modifications, of course. But those clothes suited me then and they suit me now. I also love the Elaine Bennis flats with socks look with the long skirt or dress.
Maybe I'm a fashion victim but I have fun and feel comfy and myself when I wear what I like. #urbanoutfitters
The good thing is I still have my floral dress from 1997 and buy new Docs every few years. So I'm good to go - damn. I threw out my chambray shirt years ago. Bummer. #urbanoutfitters
OK, follwoing the rule that when you are old enough to see it come around a second time, skip it...at a 39 year old, I will be naked. My beloved husband thinks I could still carry off the baby doll dresses/Doc Martin look that I was rocking in San Francisco when we met. Fod, I am in denial about how old I am...how did I become vintage? #urbanoutfitters
It's not enough that I've been listening to Smashing Pumpkins and getting teary-eyed about my far-ago teens, but now this fashion is coming back. I loved it. I loved grunge. Picture 4 makes me happy in so many ways. So does picture 9. It's everything I LOVED about getting dressed in the 90s - pretty dress, shit-kicking boots. Old jeans, flanny shirt, layers - absolutely perfect for where I live... If only I weren't just a couple of years too young, and a few testes too chicken at the time, I would have rocked the Tank Girl look so hard. #urbanoutfitters
@StarSquid: I'll be 30+... and I don't care. Nothing makes me feel better than the clothes of my angst-years. God forbid, I think I still have a few pieces of it around. 'Vintage' yo... ;) #urbanoutfitters
I am SO happy about the clothes out right now. They look almost exactly like the clothes that were around when I first became aware of fashion, but was far too young to anticipate. By the time I was old enough, it was the late 90's and it was all combats and bootcut jeans.
As a result I have waited nearly 20 long years for this moment. Now I shall finally look as cool as my babysitter Susan, circa 1992. Eeeee!
Given that Europe seems to get trends before the US, I think we will soon be in for a wave of Hammer pants. They were HUGE in Spain. And yes, just as hideous as they were back in the day.
Actually, they were worse. Lots of them were made out of denim, and the stiffer fabric made all the girls look like they'd just dumped a giant load in their diapers. #urbanoutfitters

@FontWhore (the Great Nubling Hope): I dunno. Hammer/harem/anti-fit/carrot pants have been in style in Europe for awhile, and I think Urban and other American retailers have tried to push them, but not many people are buying (thankfully). #urbanoutfitters
I was just feeling happy about the grunge comeback when I put on my flannel shirt this morning. I got it about 15 years ago and it still rocks, especially in Maine. I wore the floral dresses at the time, but I look back and cringe. They are just not very flattering. Especially since I favored the flowing skirt-pant versions that were a pain in the ass to take off in the bathroom. #urbanoutfitters
@Grim Reaper of the Forest: Yes, having been in the Pine Tree State myself for the first grunge go-round, I remember what felt like a collective sigh of releif when plaid flannel and heavy boots were suddenly cool. I can only imagine every Reny's and Labonville in the state of Maine is crossing their fingers for a comeback! #urbanoutfitters
@ItchykooParker: I had this awesome, ankle length black dress I bought at The Limited. The skirt was tiered and the top was this flower stiched and puckered. I wore it with a chocker and black ankle boots. *sigh* I loved that dress. I miss the 90's and my grunge days... #urbanoutfitters
@Red-headed bookworm: I had this amazing blue and black floral dress from The Limited that was worn over a slip (to be purchased separately, also at The Limited). The slip was longer and stuck out under the edge of the dress, and I LOVED IT. I wore it with my Doc Marten boots. I wore it to my brother's wedding. I felt very Natalie Merchant.
I was dating a much older artist at the time, and I remember him telling me that it was precisely how his girlfriend should dress. I now gag at the thought that this pleased me.
OK, on five, the top right shoe.. does anyone else remember the Month Of Keanu's Baked Potato Shoes here on J? Just me and tscheese? Well, anyway, this is the version I would wear, without (too much) snickering irony.
They're still fug, but so fug they're cute. I can't get behind any of the others, though. They're going to have to find their own apologists. #urbanoutfitters
