Oh, no. I just realized why it should be Ben---the constant deaths of children at the hands of their parents so far in the series. Ben is special in that he's both directly caused the death of his father Roger and (indirectly) his daughter--as well as forced the death of Locke's father. So now I'm speculating that Jacob is both Ben and Locke's father, and Locke forced Ben to kill their dear, weird, ageless papa.
@lalie (apologetic mess): YES! If you made all the way to halfway through season 4, don't you want to watch the final season along with the rest of us so you can talk endlessly in circles with other fans, explaining your fantastic theories that will usually be blown to crap by the next week's installment?
@lalie (apologetic mess): I had fallen behind at one point and ended up renting an entire season from Netflix and it was great. It allows you to watch the episodes back-to-back, which I found made it easier to follow than waiting a week or more in between shows. Do it!
I think it needs to be a character we are somewhat attached to, for it to have impact. For that reason, I am nixing Bram, Caesar, and Illana off my list. My vote is for Ben.
Jesus, what am I going to do when this show goes off the air!!!!
@Ruby_de_la_Booby: It's ok. You'll get through it. I've done it before. You will start to discover things about yourself. Like that you're married or have a pet. You'll discover things about the world, like that the sky is sometimes blue.
That only lasts for a while, though, and then they come out with something else to suck you back in.
Maybe it's Jack's grandfather. I've wondered why they had that one random episode with him when Jack got the shoes he put on Locke's body. He could have also been a red herring. I don't know.
I know he's not on the list, but I've seen spoilers that were misleading before, so it's possible.
I really hate having to wait until January for Lost to come back!
@coffee milk: Can you explain why you think the kidney stealer is his biological father? I always got the sense that he wasn't... especially from the scene where John's mother gives him up for adoption. Richard was there at the hospital, and the unseen "father" (who was much older than John's mother) was insinuated to be present. I originally thought the real father was Alvar what's-his-name, the original funder of the Dharma initiative, but this would also make sense...
I think the "haha secret adoption!" idea is too cheap for LOST to do, so anyone who's father we've already seen is out - Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Juliet, Hurley and Ben are mentally crossed off. Sayid and Michael as well due to ethnicity.
Which leaves me with Bram, Desmond, Caesar, Illana and Richard Alpert.
After perusing Lostpedia, my money's on Illana.
@The Queen of No: I thought that was pretty much just fan speculation that stuck. I could be wrong. I'm currently rewatching the whole series so I'll be keeping an eye out. :)
@hortense: ohhh i like your thinking here. Very smart.
And even though we've seen Ben's past, it could easily be explained that maybe he wasn't born of Roger and his wife, but instead Roger was made to be his 'father' and that's why he resented him so much? I know that it somewhat showed Roger's wife dying in labour but maybe Roger was given an ultimatum by Jacob and she had to die because she was merely a conduit for Ben to be born...
uhh, sorry, I still "suffer" from an overactive imagination (and wish that I wrote for this show).
@ms.creant: I agree - you may have a winner.
From Wikipedia:
Rachel went into a difficult labor with her second son, Benjamin. The midwife tells her in the middle of the birth that her child is a boy.[2] Before she died, Rachel named her son Ben Oni ("son of my mourning"), but Jacob called him Ben Yamin (Benjamin). Rashi explains that Ben Yamin either means "son of the right" (i.e., "south"), since Benjamin was the only one of Jacob's sons born in Canaan, which is to the south of Paddan Aram; or it could mean "son of my days," as Benjamin was born in Jacob's old age.
Although Ben's mother's name was Emily, so who the hell knows. I think you have the best theory so far though.
A painting of a woman who looks similar to Emily is briefly seen in Roger's and young Ben's barrack. In the painting she's holding a rodent-like creature that may be a hamster or guinea pig. ("The Man Behind the Curtain")
@missing_piece: thanks for providing the background info. also of note:
-The Statue on the Island looks ancient Egyptian-esque (the Biblical story of Joseph and Benjamin takes place in Egypt, and Jacob eventually settles in Egypt.)
I could go on and on about the possible Biblical parallels (Locke as Joseph, Jacob and wrestling with the Angels, etc) but I'd drive myself itchy. Ben is my smack, and LOST is my dealer. :)
But we saw that flashback with Juliet where her parents were getting divorced, right? I guess she could have been adopted and just not known it...And caesar's dead.
I'd say Richard, but I feel like he didn't come out of a uterus, he just kind of materialized one day with gorgeous eyes.
But Illana is looking for Jacob, right? She seems to know way more than she's letting on. I think she's going to be important. My vote is her. Wasn't she carrying around Locke's body?
It's been so long since the last ep, I'm trying so hard to remember what happened. Can't wait for February!!!!
I think it might be Desmond. I can't explain why, but his presence on the island and his connection to it, thru Penny, Charles Widmore etc, makes me think it could be him.
OR Richard Alpert, because he doesn't seem to age just like Jacob, perhaps its a hereditary trait?
Both of these characters weren't touched by Jacob, if I remember correctly.
I could try and solve this puzzle all day and probably be wrong in the end because LOST is a clusterfuck of confusing goodness that I love/can't wait for.
@gracie1117: I keep thinking Desmond, if just because he seems to be able to influence people right at the point of decisions (his meeting with Jack, right before he goes on his sailing trip), and unlike others, he seems to have an (albeit small) ability to actually change things as he's skipping through time.
@gracie1117: I kind of vote for Desmond, too. No specific reason why, but he just seems the most likely. It would be nice if it was a woman, though. LOST has been a little patriarchal, so it would be cool to mix it up.
@Rose.Selavy.Needs.A.Drink: I'm so curious as to how they'll tie Vincent in at the end. He was such a big part of the series in the beginning. I hope they don't have him basically disappear like Rose and Bernard.
@BabyJane: I miss Rose and Bernard but I was glad that they gave them a happy ending and I would almost hate to see that taken away by them getting pulled back into the drama. They're together, both healthy, living in the tropics ... sounds perfect to me.
@CherriSpryte: It would be nice to see Richard Alpert get a little more play on the show. And not just because of Nestor Carbonell. ;) He did tell Locke that he doesn't age because of Jacob ... which could fit in to him being his child.

Now I can't decide between trying to catch up now or waiting until the show is over so I can just marathon the shit out of it.
Current fans: is it worth it to catch up to now?
