In reply to Health Nuts: The Anti-Abortion Empire Strikes Back
I had my abortion at a small women's clinic in NH. It was a comfortable, welcoming environment, and I had a brief counseling session before I went into the waiting room to get my procedure. (I'm pretty sure this is standard practice). I was asked basic questions that didn't make me feel bad or ashamed, and I felt confident that the woman asking me the questions could tell how sure I was, even at 17, that I was making the right decision for myself, my boyfriend, and my family.

Had I seemed unsure, had my situation been different (say, if my boyfriend had pressured me into it), I got the feeling that the counselor would have been empathetic and helped me make sure what the right decision fo me would be.

All that matters is what the pregnant woman truly feels is best for her, what the right decision for her at that time is. We should never feel ashamed about the choices they make regarding our own bodies. I certainly don't feel ashamed about my choice.

Answering the questionnaire is pointless. Regardless of what the women write, they obviously do not want to, or can not raise a child.

    End of story.

Good. The wealthy constantly skirt the law when it comes to tax and whatnot. It's how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. She can afford it.

They're just going to use this information as ammunition: "See, most people get abortions JUST FOR THEIR OWN CONVENIENCE! Here's the proof! Now, can we get some public outrage going and outlaw the whole thing already?" I mean, that's not even good survey-writing policy, let alone the privacy issues this brings up.

Legal advice! I run a weekly trivia game. Last night I had a "Douches of the Decade" category (yes, inspired by the Gawker post). It included Tucker Max as an answer. I did not directly call him a douche, I merely asked about him within the category. His lawyer happened to be in attendance. I'm not in jeopardy of any sort of slander lawsuit, am I?

They need to figure out "why these are going on"? That's such an idiotic explanation. Do they really think abortions happen for shits and giggles? To piss of conservatives?

@bluewine: maybe they're 'going on' because most conservative states suppress sex-ed for young men & women and make it really difficult to get birth control (not to mention $$).

This is so invasive. I don't understand why anyone would think that women owe these answers to the world.

It's also pretty hard to respect someone who thinks women mentally compare abortion to getting a wart removed. What a condescending statement.

Would having a baby dramatically change a woman's life, or interfere with her job or education?
Yes. I am a hooker by day, and by night run Madame Lala's School for Aspiring Whores and Loose Women.

Is she unemployed, or unsure of a relationship with the father?
See above. I have a job, but no health benefits. Also, I'm not sure who the babydaddy is-so many penises, and unlike you, I don't have time to stop and ask each one to fill out a survey.

Frankly, I find the use of stealth tactics like this law, the previous Oklahoma law, laws that change provisions for seemingly innocuous things like clinic building codes (in order to push smaller clinics out of business rather than fork over a large amount of money to renovate the building to comply with the new regs), etc, just insidious and abhorrent. They can't get Roe overturned outright, so they're sneaking in the backdoor, which seems to contradict the overt morality issues they promote. It's sleazy and morally bankrupt, which irks so much more because these groups claim to be acting on moral grounds.

When my mother got her first abortion (in France), the doctor forced her to repeat after him: "I am murdering a child". This was common practice then. When I read this I wonder why it's so difficult to explain to people that no one goes to have an abortion with a light heart! No one thinks abortion is the easy choice. Stop with the guilt all the time, and give money to sex ed.

They're probably not stopping abortions, they're just making the procedure more uncomfortable, more hard. Women who want an abortion are probably pretty set on their desision before they go to the doctor. I don't think much will stop them, just make them more uncomfortable.

@chipclip: I think there would probably be a handful of women (or, more likely, girls) who'd be scared off. The kind who were too scared to tell their boyfriend to wear a condom. The kind who haven't told a soul they're pregnant and will try to bury the newborn in the field behind school.
