It was an unusually dangerous weekend on the New York City subway. And one particular set of train passengers got the horrifying shock of a lifetime. It happened at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, when people got off the L train at the Sixth Avenue stop and saw a man's severed head wedged between the train car and the platform. Oh god oh god oh god. A man who groped two young women's butts in a Harlem subway station wound up getting shot in the lower back when an off-duty police officer tried to arrest him. Officer Jason Butler got involved when a woman started calling for police because her 13-year-old daughter had been groped. Then an 18-year-old said she'd been touched too and pointed to 22-year-old Jacob Sanford, who was sitting on a bench. Butler showed his badge and tried to arrest Sanford, but they got into a fight and Sanford managed to lift Butler off the platform. Butler fired one shot because he was afraid that Sanford was about to throw him into the path of an oncoming train. Sanford was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. He has 19 arrests, including two charges of assaulting police officers, and has admitted to the two gropings. More »

Some New Yorker with a camera happened to be riding on the exact same train as none other than Keanu Reeves and, acting on an impulse that most of us try to ignore, filmed the entire train ride with his phone. On October 23 at 9:30 a.m., a man lifted up 22-year-old Shayne Dejesus' skirt and groped her while she was standing on a subway platform in New York. Apparently he thought that like many other subway pervs he could slip away undetected, but now he's been apprehended — no thanks to the other people on the platform. Disturbingly, Dejesus yelled "this man groped me," but no one helped her. "I was hysterical, my hands were shaking, I was overwhelmed," Dejesus says. Tasked with a hefty work commute, New York City-based graphic designer Elizabeth Carey Smith conducted a four-month-long study tracking how often she—a visibly pregnant woman—was offered a seat on full subway cars. With her data organized into aesthetically pleasing charts, graphs and hard numbers and divided by subway lines as well as gender of those who offered up a seat, the results are really interesting with some findings more shocking than others. A tough 26-year-old named Marie Conde scared off three muggers in New York on Sunday morning after they punched her and ran off with her purse. Marie chased the teenagers onto a station platform and grabbed one of them... leading the other muggers to plead with her to let him go. In the end, two of the kids were arrested and the woman got her purse back, which had her green card and other important papers.
