A study published in the online edition of the journal Addictive Behaviors finds that teens who drink alcohol spend more time on computers for social networking and downloading music compared to teens who don't drink. So basically, the study suggests that teens who drink engage in normal, 21st century teenage behavior compared to goodie-two-shoes types. An anonymous survey of 264 American teenagers, aged 13 to 17, showed that teens who drank alcohol in the last month used a computer more hours per week for recreational purposes. However, there was no strong link between drinking and online shopping—that's for when they become grown-ups. More »

According to a Telegraph trend piece, more and more women are experiencing a midlife crisis period. However, whereas the prototype of a male midlife crisis involves younger girlfriends, big purchases, and perhaps a pierced ear or a spray tan, the kind being ascribed to women seems a lot more responsible, in search of "meaning" and, frankly, boring. Instead of sex with younger partners and spending an amount of money on a car that's inversely proportionate to the size of their genitals, women are merely freaking out and then getting different jobs or having babies. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, while breast enhancement surgeries have increased by 40% in the past 10 years, other cosmetic procedures like nose jobs, face lifts, and liposuction are on the decline. It seems as though—breast implants aside—people are less willing to undergo other invasive surgeries than they were a decade ago, with the number of liposuctions down 43%, nose jobs down 35%, and face lifts down 16% since 2000. Tasked with a hefty work commute, New York City-based graphic designer Elizabeth Carey Smith conducted a four-month-long study tracking how often she—a visibly pregnant woman—was offered a seat on full subway cars. With her data organized into aesthetically pleasing charts, graphs and hard numbers and divided by subway lines as well as gender of those who offered up a seat, the results are really interesting with some findings more shocking than others. We already knew that those suffering from eating disorders had distorted body images, but apparently that manifests itself literally. When researchers asked women to draw themselves, they found that those suffering from anorexia or bulimia tended to draw themselves with different characteristics: no feet, larger mouths and thighs, and necks that were either larger, disconnected or missing.
