It's an image anyone who's watched the odd Looney Toon is familiar with –- the large, scary wife brandishing her rolling pin as she harries after her husband, a fellow diminutive in both size and spirit. The hen-pecked husband, and the nagging wife –- if you'd asked me about it a year ago, I would have told you it was a passe, harmless dynamic that wasn't really used on television anymore. Then, for a brief period of time, I was living in a cable-free world and suddenly I was watching a lot more three camera sitcoms than I ever had before, and there it was, proof of the bad old days alive and kicking in the form of reruns of the King of Queens. I kind of quietly adore Kevin James, and I also have no patience for the whole "why is the hot girl with the fat comedian" thing people love to do for reasons that are fairly obvious if you read any of my writing. Would I like to see a portly lady comic married to a Henry Cavill lookalike, totally, but that is neither here nor there and also would you please excuse me for a while so I can take a private moment to think about Henry Cavill. We recently found this crazy coloring book called Mexicans Don't Always Eat Tacos at a used bookstore. It's supposed to teach kids about diversity, but it was published in 1979 and all the pictures are, well, problematic. The book, which proposes to deconstruct racial stereotypes by illustrating (in full ethnographic splendor) how people aren't circumscribed by their particular ethnicities in their choice of cuisine, falls into the honeypot of racial profiling. The authors seem to make a genuine effort to tear down racial boundaries, but there's only so far their good intentions can reach through the tangled masses of curly hair that they scribble on top of their illustrated "Jew." Our enlightened, 21st century eyes may easily see the errors of ignorance in this book, but we can't fault a genuine effort. Maybe a more unifying, universal title, something that emphasized the characteristics all people share and celebrated their differences rather than just highlighting those differences with crude squiggles would have been better. Something like, "Everybody eats...except for Ethiopia." More »

Andi S-R. noticed an interesting segment in a German textbook used to teach English. In the last few years, 12th-grade English classes have started including a section about gender, so textbooks have added chapters on the topic. Andi found a supplement from Klett, one of the major German publishers of educational materials, provided a supplement for covering gender that included a brainstorming exercises. While the idea was to foster discussion about gender stereotypes, Andi questions whether the sample comments provided as examples would help with that goal or would prime students to focus on stereotypical behavior by providing it as a model (above).
