The British Fashion Awards, an annual event meant to honor those Brits who set the global fashion agenda, took place in London last night. Very fashionable humans flocked to it like sharks to a submerged bucket of blood and fish innards, and thus the red carpet was a mostly-sheer and metallic expanse of good taste.
Because the prizes are awarded decided by popular vote, Harry Styles, his hair and his ineffable boyish charm won #1 Most Fashionable (sorry, Kate Moss and David Beckham). He showed up in a stupid scarf. Let’s dive in!
Kate Moss, of course, looked stunning. She wore a laser-cut gladiatoresque leather dress under a fur coat and looked way cooler than anyone else there.
Rita Ora channelled Old Hollywood glamour in a slinky Vivienne Westwood gown and looked breathtaking. I’m not a huge fan of the jewelry, but we can’t win them all.
Alexa Chung, ever the It Girl, wore a simple Stella McCartney frock with some sleek black wedges. A bit safe, but she looks beautiful.
Sienna Miller went boho prom in a kind of ill-fitting Burberry gown.
Ok, models Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Stella Tennant seriously brought it. Rosie’s starkly tailored color-blocked Antonio Berardi suit is perfect; Stella’s take on the formal suit was a bit more experimental and edgier.
THIS is how you are meant to do a fashions award show. I am obsessed with every individual piece of Susie Lau‘s ensemble, espeically the jacket; Suzy Menkes‘ intergalactic bag lady concept is spot-on; and Simone Rocha took the oversized pink coat trend to a sublime level.
The good: Lily Donaldson in Marc Jacobs Spring 2014; Jade Parfitt wearing an actually interesting take on sheer black lace; Sukie Waterhouse wafting ethereality in a lavender gown.
In babydoll dresses: Anabel Watts; Sophia Webster; and Laura Bailey looking positively Barbie-esque.
Edie Campbell looked effortlessly cool in a more androgynous ensemble; Sienna Gillory rocked a crop top-formal trousers duo; and Emily Kennedy wore some conceptual fashion athletic wear.
Clemence Posey wore Erdem, accompanied by the designer Erdem Moralioglu; Hayley Atwell had a lil’ bit too much going on with her getup.
Did you guys know that sheer black lace is very in right now? Daisy Lowe; Laura Jackson; and Portia Freeman did.
Dominic Jones lookin’ like Kurt Cobain in a peacoat; Tinie Tempah in his formal velvets; Giles Deacon in somber plaid.
Harry Styles — WHO WON THE WHOLE THING — showed up like “whatever” in a scarf and some jeans. Whatever. Thomas Tate kept it interesting with some blue accents; JW Anderson pouted in very long trousers.
Pixie Geldorf came in looking like a very elegant space princess. The dress is from Top Shop (I tried it on once and it looked TERRIBLE on me, so it’s not recommended for non-Space Princesses). The purses are too good.
The ugly: Amber Le Bon wearing something a child made out of crepe paper; Jodie Kidd as sexy Treebeard; Tallulah Harlech in a monstrosity that appears to be a knitted peplum turtleneck dress. Noooooo.
