If you believe John McCain, this is what we'll have to look forward to after Tuesday: Socialist Fashion! “Beyond Espionage: Fashion under Socialism”, hits Victoria & Albert Museum this week, and studies the role of Eastern European fashion in Cold War propaganda and society. Says one curator, "The term ‘fashion’ itself was rejected as a wasteful phenomenon of Western capitalism. In the Eastern Bloc, the concept ‘clothing culture’ became important. It was supposed to serve the working woman in her newly established and equal social role. Dress was supposed to make women’s lives easier." In concert with last night's infomercial designed to appeal to independents, Barack Obama decided to throw a bone to his base by appearing on the Daily Show. And it was admittedly adorable: maybe it's the semi-comfortable lead he has on McCain, but Obama seemed really at ease in his own skin. He even joshed about his mixed-race background and threw a zinger at Sean Hannity fans. He also said some incredibly gracious things about John McCain, but we decided to leave those out of the above clip to preserve the funny. • Cudmudgeonly uncle-anchor Jack Cafferty has disappointed millions of women everywhere by saying, "Viagra is used to treat a medical condition, erectile dysfunction. Birth control is a lifestyle choice," when discussing John McCain's little birth control gaffe. Jack, sweetie, birth control pills do treat medical conditions and there's a good economic argument (pregnancy is expensive) for covering them. Spain's pinko prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has just begun his second term, and his commitment to gender parity in government is unparalleled: For the first time, women outnumber men 9 to 8 in the Spanish cabinet. Even more revolutionary is the fact that Spain's first female defense minister, Carme Chacón, 37, is seven months up the stick. Marisa Sotelo, president of the the Spanish Women's Foundation, says, in an interview with Time, that the impression of a pregnant women leading a group of soldiers is "an important image precisely because it conveys normality...It serves a pedagogic function: it shows that women can be and are everywhere." Unsurprisingly, not all of Spain is thrilled that a very pregnant woman will be leading Spanish troops.
