Media criticism of the troublingly thin 90210 actresses Shenae Grimes and Jessica Stroup continued this morning as The Early Show reported on the fact that sometimes being extremely thin is part of an actress's job. There are a few positive body role models on TV, as exemplified by a shot of Joan's butt on Mad Men and the "slim but healthy" Gossip Girls (no mention is made of Blair Waldorf's bulimia), but everyone else on TV is starving themselves to fit into size 0 evening gowns. Fat & Smart? Or Skinny & Stupid?

The Today show had a segment this morning ostensibly about "brains and beauty" that actually concerned some internet game "Would you rather be fat or [blank]", in which people go online and pick the "disability" they would prefer over suffering from obesity. In predictable fashion, Today show producers sent their cameras out on the street and interviewed a half-dozen people (all of them women, of course), asking "Would you rather be 40 pounds overweight and smart, or skinny and stupid?" Almost every one of the respondents picked poundage and brain cells over being svelte and stupid, except for one woman, who gave an amusing, politically-incorrect answer she will no doubt get shit for. Over the past year we've read five gazillion tab stories about Ellen Pompeo's slim Jim frame and lately we've been hearing a lot of lip from Ellen about how hard it is for her to gain weight. First she cried her "I can't gain weight" sob story to People magazine. Now thanks to this month's Allure we also know that she eats crab cakes, raspberry crepes, ice cream, hash browns, bacon, cranberry muffins and banana bread but still has trouble gaining weight.
