After hours of concentrated thought (translation: long plane flight), we've figured out why it's so hard to talk to you about Glamour and Vogue's sweatier sisters. Self (tagline: "You At Your Best") is supposed to be the healthy, life-affirming ladymag. But take a look at the August cover. You've got articles about diet, skin, butts (of course), sex — and electric bills. Swap Rebecca Romijn's sporty shorts outfit for a gown, and this cover would be indistinguishable from Cosmo or Glamour. And it's pretty much like those mags on the inside too, except where Cosmo kind of owns its brain-rotting silliness, Self couches everything in an obnoxious rhetoric of self-improvement. It's like candy disguised as vegetables, except the candy tastes bad, and makes you feel bad about yourself. You might've heard, but we're no fans of Photoshop manipulation. And while we think it's really sad when magazine editors decide that it's not okay to have an elbow and some crow's feet on a cover, it makes us even sadder to hear that some magazines retouch their models to look bigger. Yes, that's right. Bigger. Self magazine seems unashamed of the fact that they need to plump up models because they tend to be too gaunt and bony to successfully represent the publication's so-called "healthy" image. Glamour Magazine has been ranked towards the top of a list of magazines with sound nutritional information by the American Council on Science and Health, according to MediaPost.
