With 99% of precincts reporting, Santorum and Mitt Romney both have 24.6% of the vote. Ron Paul was a close third at 21.5%, and here's the rest of the lineup: Gingrich (13.2%), Perry (10.3%), and Bachmann (5.0%). Michele Bachmann's disdain for facts is well known, which is why on Fox News last night she was confidently declaring that she'll be the Republican nominee, adding, "I intend to be America's Iron Lady." However, for those of us who dwell in reality, two things have come to light that suggest Meryl Streep will never be starring in a Bachmann biopic (though somehow, she'd be able to pull it off). First, new poll numbers show that Bachmann only has 9% of the vote in the Iowa Caucuses, meaning she's only beating Jon Huntsman, who's already given up on the state. Second, Iowa state Sen. Kent Sorenson, her state campaign chairman and one of her oldest supporters, just left her campaign and announced he's backing Ron Paul. More »

Attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference have once again endorsed Texas congressman Ron Paul for President, with 30% of attendees throwing their support behind him. Mitt Romney came in second with 23% of the vote, and trailing in the single digits were Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee, neither of whom attended the convention (the reanimated corpse of Ronald Reagan probably received at least a few write-in votes). The silliness of the phrase "conservative political action" aside ("conservative political action" consists of striving to prevent progress and thus "conservative political action" is kind of like calling a logging company the "Forest Advancement League"), this poll turned up results nearly identical to last year's, with many respondents expressing dismay over the lack of appealing Republican candidates for President. Attendees of the conference skewed younger than in the past, though, and thus the Conservative Political Action Conference still holds onto hope that they might still succeed in digging America a trench to 1890, when the poor lived in tenements and women knew their place and our Great Nation's fruitful loins were bursting with coal, glorious coal, just waiting to be mined by the captains of industry, and pesky freedom-stopping Big Government rules like "child labor laws" and "the five day workweek" and "food safety standards" didn't exist. Ashley Todd, the McCain volunteer who falsely claimed that an African-American Obama supporter assaulted her, has a history of lying. Todd, a native Texan, originally worked for the Ron Paul campaign during the primaries, but was fired after she posed as a Huckabee worker and called his supporters asking for "their strategies." Todd also claimed her car had been attacked because of her Ron Paul bumper stickers and she told her hometown's GOP chairman that she was being treated for cancer and had lost all her hair. • In a 5-4 ruling today, the Supreme Court has (again) decided that the prisoners at Gitmo deserve some semblance of the rights afforded everyone else imprisoned in this country, like the right to protest to a judge the fact that they've been held for 6 years without charges. In his dissent, Justice Antonin Scalia defended the right to not afford the detainees any rights because "America is at war with radical Islamists," but I'm sure he came up with some bullshit legal reasoning to discard the Constitution like he always does.
