Racket-Toting Tornado Serena Williams is AP Female Athlete of the Year

Latest

For the third time in her 18-year professional career, Serena Williams has been awarded AP’s Female Athlete of the Year. With a record of 78-4 (with a 34-match winning streak), 11 titles, and a couple more Grand Slams under her belt, she racked up 55 of the 96 votes. 2012 AP women’s college basketball Player of the Year, Britney Griner came in second with 14 votes.

The Compton-born world No. 1 now has 17 Grand Slam titles (same as Roger Federer), and is approaching the 24-title record set by Australian Margaret Court. At 32 years, she’s outlasting and overtaking some of the greatest players, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down soon.
