An ad featuring a white man and a black woman locked in a naked, Trojan-commercial embrace with the tagline, "In OUR future, you wouldn't look twice," has given all the dormant racists in post-apartheid South Africa something to gripe about this week.  The ad, which the youth wing of the Democratic Alliance party created and posted on its Facebook page, has drawn the ire of both white and black South Africans, including an especially bigoted reaction from one commenter who posted a picture of a placid, Aryan-looking family on the DA Youth's Facebook page with the charming caption, "Now that's how it should be!"  (If that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, try repeating it with the amusing, sing-songy Boer accent, which will help underscore how absurd such an outburst really is.) I am a loyal fan of The Big C. It is beautiful in its poignant portrayal of a woman living with cancer, yet deeply flawed in its characterization of a young black woman. I'm talking about Gabourey Sidibe's character, Andrea. Of course, the fact that actresses like Sidibe are given supporting roles in shows about confident, capable women is vital, but it too often comes at a cost: The Big C's writers bestow upon Andrea qualities that have potential to give her depth, but ultimately she is more trope than fully realized. A task force convened by North Carolina governor Beverly Perdue has spent months debating what the state should do for the 1,500-2,000 living victims of its forced sterilization program, which targeted poor, black, and disabled residents all the way up into the seventies. Now, the task force has recommended that each victim (one is Elaine Riddick, pictured above) should receive $50,000 in reparations payments, as well as counseling services. The state legislature still has to approve the proposal, and it's not all that victims' advocates have asked for — one proposal called for payments of $1 million. Still, Dr. Laura Gerald, chair of the task force, says the proposal sends the message that "We in North Carolina are people who pay for our mistakes." More »

Papa John's Pizza promises you "Better Ingredients. Better Pizza," but they may now also have to worry about offering up "Less Racism." Yesterday, Minhee Cho posted a Papa John's receipt on Twitter where they'd put her name down as "lady chinky eyes." Stay classy, Papa John's employees! Obviously the minute this hit the internet, the shit hit the fan. And now, Papa John's has issued a formal apology and fired the employee from the New York location who was responsible. They are reportedly also trying to reach Cho to apologize personally. Here's hoping they don't offer her a lifetime of free pizza. The poor woman has suffered enough!

This week every player on Kenmore East High School's girls basketball team is serving a two day suspension for performing a pre-game chant that included the N-word. The team's only black player says she asked her teammates to stop doing the cheer, but they explained it was just a joke and they aren't racist. The whole point of TLC's All-American Muslim — which follows families living in Dearborn, Michigan — is to humanize folks who live in the U.S. and practice Islam. They have close-knit relationships, love football, and feel anxious about the first day of school, just like any other Americans. But home improvement retailer Lowe's has pulled ads from the program following a complaint from the Florida Family Association. The Florida Family Association is allegedly devoted to "improving America's moral environment." A 34-year-old English woman will be spending Christmas in jail after her request for bail was denied. She was originally thrown in the clink after she let out a racist (and apparently drunken) rant during a train ride, yelling about how immigrants should just go back to their own countries — naturally, the episode went viral on YouTube. She's been receiving death threats, and white supremacist groups are rallying to support their barely coherent hero. The racial views of the members of the Gulnare Free Will Baptist Church in Kentucky evolved about 60 years in the past week, and all it took was a massive outpouring of shock and rage from people around the world. Yesterday, a week after nine people voted to pass a ban on interracial couples at the church, the decision was nullified. Pastor Stacy Stepp says that in place of the proclamation pushed by his predecessor, the congregation passed a new resolution that welcomes, "believers into our fellowship regardless of race, creed or color." We recently found this crazy coloring book called Mexicans Don't Always Eat Tacos at a used bookstore. It's supposed to teach kids about diversity, but it was published in 1979 and all the pictures are, well, problematic. The book, which proposes to deconstruct racial stereotypes by illustrating (in full ethnographic splendor) how people aren't circumscribed by their particular ethnicities in their choice of cuisine, falls into the honeypot of racial profiling. The authors seem to make a genuine effort to tear down racial boundaries, but there's only so far their good intentions can reach through the tangled masses of curly hair that they scribble on top of their illustrated "Jew." Our enlightened, 21st century eyes may easily see the errors of ignorance in this book, but we can't fault a genuine effort. Maybe a more unifying, universal title, something that emphasized the characteristics all people share and celebrated their differences rather than just highlighting those differences with crude squiggles would have been better. Something like, "Everybody eats...except for Ethiopia." More »

People often tell me that I don't look like your average Occupy protestor. I was initially drawn to the Occupy movement for several reasons. As an educator, anything that gets young people paying attention to the world around them is something that I feel the need to support. As an activist and organizer, I generally believe in the need for all citizens to engage in this kind of political discourse. As a black woman, I feel any conversation about economic inequality is incomplete if it doesn't also address racial inequality as well.
