This weekend, a picture of a female Tahrir Square protester having her clothes torn off while a soldier prepared to kick her renewed global concern that perhaps the new government of Egypt isn't being quite so awesome to the ladies. Today, thousands of Egyptian women took to the streets of Cairo to protest the ruling military government's rampant fuckery. And the government? They're denying that what's depicted in the now-infamous photograph is violence; according to them, it's apt response to provocation. For Bedouin tribes burning garments is a symbolic gesture that signifies an appeal to fellow tribesmen for help. Yesterday we mentioned the arrest of Manal al-Sherif, who is part of the social media campaign encouraging Saudi Arabian women to defy the law by driving cars themselves. There's a huge protest planned for June 17th, and on that day, Manal al-Sherif wants women to get in their cars and drive. Some Facebook groups support her efforts, while others — like this one — oppose the protest, and suggest that women who participate should be whipped. Manal al-Sherif has already been released from jail. We'll have to wait until mid-June to see how many other brave women will join her on the road. More »

It's no surprise that the GOP isn't a fan of the anti-war group Code Pink but it seems the organization doesn't get much love from Democrats either. Anne Elizabeth Moore, a journalist who has been embedded in the group, reports that the hot pink-clad protesters have "come to be viewed as a gaggle of smart but silly women, an unkempt listserve, and a mismatched array of girly accouterments." Code Pink has been mocked by both President Bush and The Daily Show for interrupting speeches and congressional debates, protesting at military recruiting stations, and generally practicing "strategic irritation" at many events. Moore suggests that the left may be harboring some bias against a group of mostly middle-aged, upper middle class white women who don't seem to have that much to complain about. But, it may just be that people are turned off by tactics like those demonstrated at a recent military recruitment protest in Berkeley, California, when Code Pink members took off their shirts and shouted "breasts not bombs."
