Sofia Coppola, maker of quiet and existential movies about humans who don’t quite feel like they belong, was ready to make a quiet and existential movie about a mermaid who didn’t quite feel like she belonged. But now she’s not. Deadline reports “the all-encompassing ‘creative differences’ is being cited.”

Though the script Coppola and Universal Pictures couldn’t agree on has yet to surface online, I took a stab at writing its first page:

I’m probably way off, but maybe I’m not! Either way, I do wish Coppola—a truly inspired choice—had been able to follow through with her vision. Cinema hasn’t had a bigger loss since, oh, Jodorowsky being unable to film his version of Dune.
