Casey Anthony Reportedly in Talks with NBC for TV Deal

Four years after she was acquitted of murdering her two-year-old daughter Caylee, Page Six is reporting that Casey Anthony is in talks with NBC for a potential interview. Someone once jokingly offered Anthony $10,000 not to write or say anything about her case. It’s safe to say that any news network who does manage to interview her will—directly or indirectly—be paying her a lot more.

This wouldn’t be Anthony’s first public comment since the case concluded; Piers Morgan talked to her and her lawyer by phone in 2012. Anthony told Morgan that she did not kill her daughter, and said she was in “a different kind of prison” since the case ended, because she was afraid to go outside. She filed for bankruptcy in 2013. At the time, the trustee overseeing her case asked the judge for permission to sell the “worldwide rights” to her story to cover her debts, arguing that it was “property” that could be sold out from under her, like anything else. He withdrew that plan in July of that year, after her attorneys argued that would create “a slippery slope that would have dangerous repercussions far beyond the scope of this case.”

Now, Page Six’s Emily Smith reports that Anthony met with a “top booker” at the news network. The company declined to comment, but Smith reports that an unnamed source told her “News divisions meet with people in the news all the time — as of now, nothing is planned.”

Except Anthony isn’t in the news, and hasn’t been for years — the only potential news value here is a big, tell-all, “breaking her silence” type sitdown where she insists once again to a different audience that she didn’t kill her daughter.

In 2011, both NBC and ABC came under scrutiny for their practice of paying for interviews, and ABC said later that year that they’d stop paying “licensing fees.” NBC, however, continues to do so, most recently paying the family of Reeva Steenkamp for an interview that aired in the fall of 2014.
