At this point, we know that most, if not all, of the commercial, non-news images we see are digitally enhanced. Still, studies show that women — of all sizes — feel bad and/or think negative thoughts about their bodies after viewing pictures of models in magazine ads for just three minutes. And many magazine readers are not yet women; they are girls, with still-developing physiques, self-esteem and brains. Yet extensive Photoshopping persists. But what if you could measure just how much a photograph had been altered? Would it help in countering the effect of these misleading images? Photographer Gabrielle Revere followed 19-year-old model Karlie Kloss from Paris to New York to her home in St. Louis, and created a gorgeous gallery of images, detailing the energy, beauty, promise and ambition of a young woman whose life is full of contrasts. She wears couture for work, yet, according to Life, she "still sweetly brings homemade cookies to the crew at photo shoots, still goes home to her family whenever she can, still worried whether she looked all right in her prom dress." In addition to being displayed online, the photographs will be in a special printed edition of Life that will be passed out at Lincoln Center during Fashion Week. More »

Fashionising has drawn attention to several similarities between photographer Jeff Bark's series "Woodpecker," one image from which is shown at left, and a fashion spread just published by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott in the new issue of LOVE, one image from which is shown at right. From the department of this thing looks (kinda?) like that thing: Neiman Marcus says its new fall ad campaign, starring Drew Barrymore, is themed around "Old Hollywood." "The shoot tells the story of a star's transformation," says the store spokesperson. Barrymore is depicted lying on a crumpled car. To some, this pose and setting suggests a very different kind of 1940s reference: photographer Robert Miles' famous image of Evelyn McHale, who in 1947 committed suicide by jumping from the observation deck of the Empire State Building, and landed on a parked limousine. The photo of McHale, 23, was published soon after in Life magazine. It wouldn't be the first time that fashion photography referenced suicide. More »

Diane von Furstenberg sat for a portrait with Chuck Close six weeks after a skiing accident left her with a broken nose and fractured bones in her face. "I gave up on my looks a long time ago," says the designer. In fact, she wishes Close could have taken this color Polaroid closer to her accident. "I should have come here when my face was blue. There was a time when there was a lot of blue but no swelling." Aging doesn't trouble Diane von Furstenberg. "I've always liked wrinkles. When I was a young girl, I used to make lines on my face with my nails because I loved Jeanne Moreau. I always wanted to be older; I always added years to my life.
