"This is my kindergarten picture, taken in 1979 at Rea Woodman Elementary in Wichita, KS.

I'm wearing a dress that my great-grandmother sent me from France, and my apple necklace and matching earrings came from Avon (I still have them!). You can't see my shoes, but they're bright red patent-leather Mary Janes.

About the hair. It was my favorite hairstyle, so it was an obvious choice for school pictures. By the following school year my mother had gone back to work so in all subsequent school pictures I look like a hobo.

I finally got contact lenses in seventh grade, but at the time this picture was taken I thought my glasses were totally rad.
