"This portrait was taken towards the beginning of my 'Betty Finn' period. I thought the giant pink plastic eyeglass frames were pretty stylin'. I'm rocking a peach polka-dotted Polly Flinders dress with puffy sleeves, an enormous lacy collar and belt that ties in a giant rear bow; white lace-trimmed knee socks and white patent leather shoes. With bows. My mom dressed me, so I had no input there.

We were told to bring in Our Favorite Thing as a prop. Band geeks posed with their instruments, my little sister brought in her favorite stuffed animal. I brought in a huge leatherbound book. Because I was kind of a nerd, books were an escape from the horrible social scene." --betty.black
