"This picture, taken when I was about eight or nine, highlights my awesome
Afro and major bitch-face. I was about to head out to a tap dance recital
and my dad would NOT stop taking pictures. I was very serious about my tap
dancing and wanted to GET TO THE THEATER, not stand around posing and
looking pretty. In retrospect, I think my hair could have benefited from a
cute barrette or two in the front -- thanks for nothing, mom! -- but this was
the last hurrah of my Afro, which was actually more like a pouf than a
classic 'Fro. By the following year, it was longer and I had demanded that
